Afternoon Sermon: How To Be Grateful Even Though You Don’t Feel Like It
"Be thankful in all things. All things."
That’s what the Bible says. All things. Not just the "bling" things, the easy things, or the answered prayers. The Bible commands us to be thankful in all things—even the hard things, the hideous things, the things we never wanted, and the moments of heartbreak, pain, and agony that make you wonder if you can stand to live another day.
How do you have gratitude like that? Is it truly possible for an individual to be thankful in the middle of a storm?
Let’s break down what the Word actually teaches us:
In All Things vs. For All Things: Paul tells believers to maintain a grateful heart in the middle of every trial, hardship, or dark circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18). The Bible does not command us to praise God for sin, evil, or tragedy itself—those things are not from God's good heart.
The Greek Preposition: The original text uses the Greek word en (meaning "in" or "in connection with"). This reminds us to look to God’s sustaining grace while we go through the fire, rather than celebrating the pain itself.
God's Sovereignty: We can give thanks in suffering because we trust that God is greater than our troubles. He overrules and redeems our pain. As Romans 8:28 promises, God works all things together for good, shaping our character even when our current situation feels impossible to understand.
Sent to Remind Us: God often sends other people—our brothers, sisters, friends, and the family we choose—to remind us of His goodness when we are blinded by our own circumstances.
💡 Truth Over Feelings
Feelings change constantly. They are easily overwhelmed by exhaustion, grief, anxiety, or stress. Gratitude cannot rely on how we feel; it must rely on what we know to be true.
We don't praise God because our day is going perfectly; we praise Him because His character never changes! Even in the dark, the fact remains: He is good, He is sovereign, and He is with us.
When a situation goes wrong, human nature hyper-focuses on the single negative thing, blinding us to everything else. Flip the script! Give thanks for the things that didn't go wrong today, or the fundamental blessings we take for granted.
"If you woke up tomorrow with only the things you gave thanks for today, what would you have left?"
🗣️ Motion Precedes Emotion
Emotion often follows motion. If we wait until we feel like being grateful before we say "thank you," we might never say it!
Speaking words of gratitude—even with a heavy heart or a cracking voice—is an active step of faith. It forces our minds to break out of a loop of complaining and opens the door for our emotions to catch up.
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.
Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.
Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start right now and make a brand new ending!
Let's give thanks today—not only to God, but to your brother, sister, family, friends, and the friends who became family. Hug your animal today. They love you unconditionally and remind us of pure grace!
☕ The First-Breath Prayer
When you hear a sound... and one eye opens... and you can smell coffee (thank the person who brewed it for you, or be thankful you get to enjoy it)... before you even move from that spot, pray:
"Good Morning God (or Lord), THANK YOU for waking me up TODAY. I'm glad to take another breath and that You gave me another day. Thank You, and please bless me today to have a productive day and help people the best I can. Thank You for taking care of my family and my surroundings. Thank You for moving me forward to be a better person, and thank You for helping me help someone else. You Rock, and this is going to be a great day. Amen!"
Now, every morning prayer will be different because you speak what is on your heart. You might even roll over and put yourself back to sleep for a bit! But whenever you rise, start with a "Thank You, God." Say it out loud or say it in your spirit—God hears both!
🕊️ How God Hears You: Spoken & Silent Prayer
I used to think that if I felt it in my head and heart, it should be enough—and guess what? The Bible explicitly teaches that God hears both spoken and silent prayers equally. He is entirely focused on the posture and sincerity of your heart.
There is no spiritual hierarchy between speaking out loud and praying silently. Scripture is filled with examples of both:
He Knows Your Thoughts: Psalm 139:2 says, "You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar." God doesn't require vocal cords to hear you because He searches your mind and heart directly.
Hannah’s Silent Cry: In 1 Samuel 1:12–13, Hannah prayed in deep anguish for a child. She was "speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard." The priest Eli thought she was drunk, but God heard her silent, wordless prayer and answered it!
The Holy Spirit Intercedes: Romans 8:26 notes that when we are too overwhelmed to form words, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us through "groanings too deep for words."
Vocalization Keeps Us Focused: On the other hand, many believers find that praying out loud—just as King David frequently did ("I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy" — Psalm 142:1)—keeps the human mind from wandering or falling asleep! Jesus prayed both privately in quiet and out loud, giving us the vocal blueprint of the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13).
Ultimately, whether the words cross your lips or stay in your heart, God is listening to the intent and faith behind them. God is the Master of the Mind. He doesn't need us to shout for Him to hear us. He is so close that He hears the silent whispers of a broken heart.
Grace for the Wild Mind: God designed our minds, and He knows when they are moving a million miles an hour. He doesn't demand long, perfectly organized prayers. He welcomes the raw, short, messy cries for help.
When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you… never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn! 🌊✨
