Once again our crew had another great training night. This time it was with the Harney District EMS staff.

The Burns Fire Department is an Advanced EMT (AEMT) non-transport service. Which means we provide limited advanced life support at an emergency scene without transporting the patient in our apparatus.

Having that level of service requires us to keep up on our continued education. What better way to do that than with an awesome group of people!

The Harney District EMS staff assisted us in making this training possible with a mock code scenario. The scenario involved using perishable skills like CPR and airway management just to name a few.

We also worked on team coordination. This allows us to better support the Harney District EMS when we assist them on calls with setting up equipment and tools that they may need, allowing for a better outcome with patient care.

Having strong working relationships build trust, boost efficiency, and directly improves the quality of service provided to our communities!

Once again we want to give a Huge shout out to the HDH EMS staff that made this possible! Thank you!

Fall open debris burning starts Oct. 1, 2026, for the City of Burns City of Hines and Harney County Residence

Fall burning season is nearly here. Burning is a great way to clear dead vegetation and clean up. Before you light your piles or grass this fall, take the necessary precautions to ensure your burn does not become the next wildfire.

Burn early in the day and check weather for afternoon or next day wind conditions. Have proper personnel, equipment and water supply with you, and always make sure the area is cold to the touch before leaving. Checking the following day is also important.

Those burning are responsible for all suppression, property costs if a fire escapes control. If a fire does get out of control, call 911 immediately.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BURNING PERMIT BEFORE BURNING.
BURNING HOURS ARE BETWEEN 8:00 AM AND 4:00 PM.
CALL CITY OF BURNS FIRE DEPARTMENT AT 541-573-2320 WITH QUESTIONS.

Last night was another successful training! You can never train to much on basic firefighting skills.

The skill that we trained on last night was stretching crosslay hose loads

A crosslay hose load is a pre-connected attack line that is packed and stored perpendicular (crosswise) across a fire apparatus

This foundational practice for crosslay hose management builds core muscle memory. Mastering these fundamentals ensures that deployment is flawless under high-stress conditions.

Using our crosslay hose load prop allows us to maximize our repetitions with rapid repacking. Keeps our Emergency response apparatus in service and enhances saftey by reducing fall risks since we do not have to climb on top of the apparatus to load the hose each time.

The aerial ladder climb is considered a foundational rite of passage for rookie and probationary firefighters in departments around the world.

Since this ladder is new to us technically speaking that makes us all rookies to this apparatus, so to keep the right of passage, we climbed our ladder truck fully extended 75ft in the air around a 60 degree angle in full PPE for our weekly night training

This training is rarely about pure physical strength. Instead it serves as a critical mental milestone designed to conquer acrophobia, build trust in the equipment that we use and helps us instill muscle memory for navigating high-stress, high-consequence transitions under pressure.

Dusty Threads & Thrift mission is to provide for the needs of our community, to support social organizations and individuals through monies recieved from recycling donations in Harney County.

That is exactly what they have done. With their donations to the Burns Fire Department adding up to approximately $4,000 we were able to purchase 4 AED"s to put on our emergency response vehicles. This allows us to have an AED on all of our first out response vehicles.

We would like to give a huge shout out to Dusty Threads & Thrift for their support. Thank you!

Today marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11. We said we would never forget.

2,977 civilians lost their lives

343 firefighters lost their lives with more than 600 additional firefighters have died from 9/11 related illnesses.

72 law enforcement officers lost their lives

Today when you are with your families enjoying our great country, please take a moment to remember and honor the lives that were lost.

In remembrance of the lives lost we will fly the flag half mast and a thin "red and blue" line flag to honor the firefighters and law enforcement officers who lost their lives rushing into danger to save others.
