That school bus stop might add a few minutes to your commute, but those few minutes matter.

When a school bus has flashing red lights and its stop arm extended, stop and wait. Don't rush around the bus or try to beat the stop.

Be patient. Stop for the bus.

📢 Attention those impacted by Tropical Storm Helene!

The Helene Disaster Case Management (DCM) Program has been extended through January 22, 2027. To support a smooth program transition and prioritize ongoing recovery work, the program will close to new intakes on August 31, 2026.

We are working closely with partners across the state to ensure that survivors continue to receive the support they need. More information about program transition plans will be shared later this summer and fall.

Today starts a stretch of heat and humidity that feels more like July than September. Remember to stay hydrated and take cooling breaks if working outside. Check on persons vulnerable to heat. Relief comes next week, but it still won't feel like fall.

🔥 Burn Ban Reminder & Smoke Update for Yancey County

Yancey County, along with the entire state of North Carolina, remains under a statewide burning ban. Under the Fire Marshal’s orders, no open burning is permitted at this time.

We’ve received several calls today about smoke in the area. There are currently no active fires in Yancey County.
The smoke you’re seeing is drift smoke traveling in from surrounding counties where active fires are ongoing.

We truly appreciate everyone staying alert and reaching out with concerns. Your awareness helps keep our community safe.

If you see anything suspicious or believe there is an active fire, please report it immediately.

Stay safe, Yancey County. 🔥
