🚗📚 SCHOOL PERMIT DRIVERS — KNOW THE RULES! 📚🚗

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind students and parents about the restrictions that come with a Nebraska School Permit.

A School Permit is issued for a specific purpose — getting to and from school and school-related activities. It is NOT a permit to drive around town or run personal errands.

✅ WHAT YOU MAY DO:

A School Permit holder may drive:

🏫 To and from school
🏀 To and from school activities, events, and functions
👨‍👩‍👧 To transport immediate family members to school or school-related activities

➡️ You must use the most direct and accessible route between your home and school/activity, using the nearest highway.

❌ WHAT YOU MAY NOT DO:

🚫 Drive around town just because you have a permit
🚫 Take a “shortcut” or detour for personal reasons
🚫 Stop at a friend's house or another secondary location
🚫 Use the vehicle for personal errands or activities unrelated to school
🚫 Pick up or give rides to friends, classmates, or other non-family members

For example:
If you are driving home from school, your School Permit does not allow you to drive to a friend's house, drive around town, stop at a business for personal reasons, and then continue home. Your trip should be school → home using the most direct and accessible route.

The same applies when traveling from home to school.

📖 Nebraska law specifically limits School Permit driving to travel to and from school, including school events and functions, along the most direct and accessible route, and allows transportation of the permit holder or a family member to school-related activities.

This is about keeping our young drivers, passengers, and everyone else on our roads safe. We encourage parents and students to know the restrictions before getting behind the wheel.

⚠️ Having a School Permit does not mean you have unrestricted driving privileges.

Please take a few minutes to review the rules with your student.

Drive smart. Follow the rules. Get there safely.
