Weekly Training Spotlight: Air Bag Operations

This week, our on-duty crews focused on air bag utilization and lifting operations. Engine 33 is equipped with multiple sizes and configurations of lifting air bags, providing our firefighters with versatile tools for a variety of emergency situations.

These tools can be used in numerous scenarios, including motor vehicle extrications involving crush injuries, agricultural accidents, and structural collapses.

During this training, on-duty crews practiced basic lifting operations while incorporating cribbing strategically placed wooden blocks used to stabilize and secure a load as it is lifted. Proper cribbing techniques are essential for maintaining stability and protecting both victims and rescuers during lifting operations.

Consistent training helps ensure our crews are prepared to adapt, overcome challenges, and safely respond when the unexpected happens.

Train hard. Work safely. Serve proudly.

Incident Report: Mutual Aid Response

On October 8, 2026, at approximately 3:40 PM, the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory was requested by the Edgerton Fire Department to respond to the Village of Edgerton for a reported possible kitchen fire.

On-duty crews promptly responded with Engine 33 and Chief 30. While en route, crews requested a station coverage page to notify callback personnel and ensure adequate fire and emergency response coverage remained available within the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory’s response areas.

Upon arrival, crews assisted Edgerton Fire Department personnel with overhaul operations and the removal of a residential kitchen stove.

All Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory units returned to the City of Butler and were back in service shortly after 4:20 PM. No injuries were reported.

The Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory thanks the Edgerton Fire Department for the mutual-aid request and remains committed to supporting neighboring departments and the communities they serve.

Training Notice: Driver/Operator

We’ve been busy at the Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory!

Over the past month, our crews have been working with new recruits on driver/operator skills, with an emphasis on safely and confidently operating our larger apparatus.

Training has included maneuvering Quint 39 through a cone course, navigating tight turns, backing into confined areas, and improving overall apparatus positioning and control.

These skills are critical for our driver/operators. Safely maneuvering a large apparatus in tight quarters takes practice, precision, and plenty of seat time.

We’re proud of the time and effort our new recruits are putting into their training as they continue developing the skills needed to safely operate our apparatus and serve our community.

And remember if you see our crews out and about, feel free to wave, stop and say hi, or even come back to the station for a cup of coffee! We’re always happy to meet and talk with the members of our community.

Train hard. Drive smart. Serve our community.

Training Notice: Cardiac Arrest Drill

Yesterday, we were grateful for the opportunity to participate in a cardiac arrest drill at Eastside High School.

The exercise was facilitated by DeKalb County Emergency Management and the DeKalb County Health Department, bringing together school staff and multiple local emergency response agencies for a realistic, hands-on training exercise.

This drill provided Eastside High School staff with the opportunity to practice recognizing a cardiac emergency, immediately initiating CPR, and providing lifesaving care until emergency responders arrived. Early recognition and rapid intervention are critical when seconds matter.

Participating partners included:

• Eastside High School Staff
• Butler Police Department
• Butler/Wilmington Fire Territory
• DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office
• Parkview DeKalb EMS
• DeKalb County Emergency Management
• DeKalb County Health Department

We appreciate the commitment of everyone involved in making this training opportunity possible. Exercises like this strengthen communication, coordination, and preparedness while giving school staff the confidence and skills needed to act during a real emergency.

Thank you to Eastside High School and all participating agencies for prioritizing the safety of our students, staff, and community.

25 Years. Never Forgotten.

Today, we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 a day that forever changed our nation and the fire service.

We remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost and honor the firefighters, police officers, EMS providers, and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage, selflessness, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to carry their memory with us and honor the legacy they left behind.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
