Butte-Silver Bow Parks and Recreation Butte-Silver Bow organizes adult sports including softball and volleyball.

Butte-Silver Bow Parks and Recreation enhances community life through parks, trails, aquatics, recreation, and urban forestry—providing vibrant and accessible outdoor spaces for all. Altogether, the Butte-Silver Bows’s park sites total more than 450 acres of developed and undeveloped park land that provide both active and passive recreation opportunities for residents, supplemented by the incredible public lands and open spaces in the Butte-Silver Bow area. Currently, the city provides sports fields and other athletic facilities including outdoor basketball courts, a skateboard park, tennis, and volleyball courts, ice skating rinks, and a nine-hole and par-3 golf course. Partnerships with local youth organizations provide recreation opportunities including little league, football, tennis, and soccer. Butte-Silver Bow natural areas include Thompson Park, a 3,800-acre forested park south of Butte that is co-owned and co-managed by the U.S. Forest Service; Big Butte, which is 310 acres; Skyline Park, which is 60 acres; Basin Creek Reservoir, which is 42 acres; and Blacktail Creek, which is 10 acres. Butte-Silver Bow has developed an urban trail system within its parks as well as trails that connect to surrounding open spaces utilizing many of the Butte’s railroad and stream corridors such as the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad (BA&P) corridor, Blacktail, and Silver Bow Creek Greenway Trails. City-county trails are only a piece of the trails recreation available in the Butte area. The Forest Service maintains numerous trails in the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest, including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST), which runs to the immediate east and south of Butte and has numerous connections to local trails at Thompson Park, Blacktail Canyon, and Maud S Canyon. The CDNST and other trails are easily accessible within a 15-20 minute drive from Butte at the Homestake (on I-90) and Pipestone (on MT-2) trailheads.

There are some exciting updates happening at Clark Park! Our crew just finished installing a new bench at the toddler playground (ages 2–7), officially wrapping up that project. We also have a new sculpture on the mound. A huge thank‑you to Kahl Clark and his family for sharing another wonderful piece from his father's collection.

Go check it out next time you’re at the park!

The Forest Service has changed the closure time for gates. Gates will now be open 8 am to 6 pm. The public can park after hours at the entrance and at Lions Den. Gates hours will remain through the month and then close for the season November 1 through April 30.

There's still plenty of great hiking, biking, and riding with fall colors and opportunities to see wildlife.

Due to the shorter days, our current hours will be 9:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. The last tee time is at 5:30 pm

As we wrap up our 8th season at Ridge Waters Waterpark, along with another great year at the renovated Highland View Golf Course and the premier playground at Stodden Park, I wanted to share a quick community update.

We’re still finalizing the numbers and a more formal report will be presented to the Council of Commissioners toward the end of the year. But by all accounts, Ridge Waters welcomed more than 31,000 visitors again this season.

Highland View Golf Course had a record number of pass holders and continues to grow in popularity, while the Stodden Park playground remains a favorite destination for children and families from across our area.

I want to once again thank the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation and Montana Resources for making all of this possible. Stodden Park would not be what it is today without their generosity and vision.

And a big thank-you to our Parks and Recreation team for another great summer, not only at Stodden Park, but across all of our parks and trails. Your hard work helps make these places special for our entire community.
