π Why Do We Teach Nonsense Words? π€
Have you ever heard your child reading words like mip, lat, or vop and wondered, βWhy are they practicing words that aren't even real?β
There's an important reason! At Butte Elementary, we use nonsense words as part of our Science of Reading approach to strengthen foundational reading skills.
Nonsense words help students:
Build decoding skills: Practice connecting letters to sounds and blending those sounds together to read words.
Apply phonics strategies: Because nonsense words have no meaning, students must rely on their phonics knowledge rather than memorization or guessing.
Demonstrate reading growth: Assessments like DIBELS use nonsense words to help us measure how well students apply their letter-sound knowledge to unfamiliar words.
Become confident readers: Students who can decode unfamiliar words are better prepared to tackle new vocabulary and increasingly challenging texts.
π‘ Try It at Home! Ask your child to read a pretend word like mip or vop. Encourage them to say each sound and blend the sounds together. Celebrate their effort as they crack the code!
π§‘π The goal isn't to teach children made-up words. It's to give them the skills to read REAL words independently!
