⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER ALERT ⚠️

The Byram Township Police Department is reminding residents to prepare for the severe weather impacting our area. Periods of heavy rain and strong, gusty winds may create hazardous travel conditions, downed trees and wires, localized flooding, and possible power outages.

BEFORE & DURING THE STORM:

🏡 Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, and other loose items.

🔋 Charge cell phones and portable battery packs and have flashlights readily available.

🚗 Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

🌊 Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

⚡ Stay away from downed trees, utility poles, and power lines. Always assume a downed wire is live.

🔌 If you lose power, use generators outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate a generator inside a home or garage.

🤝 Check on elderly or vulnerable family members and neighbors when it is safe to do so.

📱 Continue monitoring reliable weather sources and local emergency notifications for changing conditions.

🚨 WHEN TO CALL 9-1-1:

Call 9-1-1 for emergencies or situations involving an immediate threat to life or safety. Please avoid calling 9-1-1 simply to report a power outage or obtain weather information so emergency lines remain available for those who need immediate assistance.

🚧 If you encounter a flooded or blocked roadway, do not attempt to drive around barricades or through standing water. Find an alternate route.

Our officers and emergency personnel will continue monitoring conditions and responding as needed throughout the storm.

Please stay safe, stay prepared, and use caution.

Is this you or someone you know? If so, it’s time to stop. While most people are understanding of respectful, responsible dirt bike, ATV, and side-by-side enthusiasts, riding fast or doing wheelies in the street, riding on town property, or on private land is strictly forbidden.

Loud, late-night rides with blaring music also disturb surrounding residents. Trust me, no one is impressed with your cut-outs 😉

…And last but not least, the golf cart kids. We have received numerous complaints about young kids driving around various streets unsafely. This is prohibited; please address this.

Let’s keep our community safe and enjoyable for everyone. Ride responsibly!

Please be advised that the Andover Township Police Department reports the following:

Forest Lakes Drive will be completely closed from Route 206 to the three-way intersection (the triangle) to through traffic beginning this Friday September 11, 2026 from 7AM until about 5PM to accommodate the upcoming paving project.

Buses and emergency vehicles will still be able to get through the work zone.

Due to the narrow roadway conditions in certain areas, as well as the numerous curves and turns along the roadway, it has been determined that a full road closure is necessary and in the best interest of public safety during paving operations.

The complete closure will allow paving crews and equipment to safely perform the work while reducing the risk to motorists, pedestrians and workers in the construction area. We understand this closure may cause temporary inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve the roadway.

Please plan an alternate route and do not attempt to enter the closed portion of the roadway. Follow all posted detours and closure signage.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as this important work is completed.

The Byram Township Police Department, in conjunction with Mount Olive Township Police Department, Washington Township Police Department, Hackettstown Police Department, Stanhope Police Department, Chester Township Police Department, Roxbury Township Police Department, Netcong Police Department, and the Morris County Sheriff's Office will be conducting targeted high-visibility traffic enforcement throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend. These agencies will coordinate enforcement efforts with a focus on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and driving while intoxicated (DWI) in an effort to keep roadways safe during one of the busiest and most dangerous travel periods of the year.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 511 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide during the 2023 Labor Day holiday weekend. Thirty-six percent of those fatalities involved a drunk driver, and 62% of the drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher, nearly twice the legal limit.
New Jersey has also experienced its share of deadly crashes during the holiday. New Jersey State Police data shows that 41 people were killed on New Jersey roadways during the five Labor Day holiday periods from 2019 through 2023.
