🚨 New Medication Alert🚨
Starting this week, all GCEMS units will be equipped with Oxytocin for initial treatment of Post-Partum Hemorrhage!
➖What is it?
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring hormone your body already produces during childbirth. This medication is the synthetic version of it, and it works by causing the uterus to contract.
➖Why are we carrying it?
Postpartum hemorrhage — heavy bleeding after childbirth — is one of the most serious and time-sensitive emergencies our crews can respond to. Because Greene County’s more rural areas can mean transport to a Level I Trauma Center can take well over an hour, having this medication on board means our paramedics can begin maternal care and treatment immediately instead of waiting until arrival at the hospital.
➖What does it do?
Oxytocin causes the uterus to firmly contract, which helps control bleeding at its source. For a new mother experiencing a hemorrhage, that early intervention can make a life-saving difference in the critical minutes before reaching definitive hospital care. Oxytocin to assist in the stopping of hemorrhage, and eventually blood administration to replace what was lost to continue oxygenation and perfusion.
This addition reflects our alignment with the New York State Collaborative ALS Protocols and continues GCEMS’s mission of bringing hospital-level interventions directly to our community.
