For the November issue of “WHRC: From the Archives” (our new monthly blog series – link in comments), I wrote about our community cookbook collection: recipes collected and published by women’s clubs over the decades. As we get ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow, let’s take a look at the earliest cookbook in our collection—not a club-produced book as it happens, but that's okay since it was written by our founder.

Jane Cunningham Croly, also known by her pen name Jennie June, was a 19th century journalist who often focused on women’s issues in both domestic and public spheres. In addition to her newspaper career, she also wrote several books, including “Jennie June’s American Cookery Book” (first published in 1866). Dedicated “to the young housekeepers of America,” the book provides countless recipes alongside advice on family nutrition and household management – including the ideal Thanksgiving menu.

Our copy is the 1878 edition, originally owned by Irene Turner (1908-1988) of Oklahoma; the worn cover and stained pages make it clear that she (and perhaps her foremothers) referenced it frequently. The book was passed through the family and ended up with Irene’s grand-nephew, Ed Ward and his wife Joyce, a member of GFWC Heeko Club of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; the Wards donated it to the WHRC in 2001.

📷 Cover of "Jennie June's American Cookery Book," along with her suggested Thanksgiving dinner menu, and her recipe for mince pies (written in her delightfully conversational manner).

Happy to share that our GFWC Women’s Club of Huntington Park shared a very productive monthly meeting along with our Annual 2024 Friendsgiving Dinner. A big Thank you to Josefina López that cooked our Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing. Also to our members that brought a side dish or dessert to share with the group. Lots of gifts were raffled and we ended our evening full of gratitude and thankful for a amazing year and looking forward to next year’s projects.
