⚡Power Outage / Incident Alert – 9200 block of Peach Avenue⚡[8/25/2025]

Southern California Edison has a crew responding to a power outage that is affecting residents of California City. The unexpected power outage was caused by a commercial truck striking power lines that brought power poles and lines down to the ground.

A vegetation and wooden fence fire ensued after. Paramedic Engine 19 arrived on the scene and initiated fire suppression and structural protection of near by dwellings. The fire was quickly and cautiously extinguished due to the downed power lines.

Status of the power outage can be viewed on Southern California Edison Outage Center website: https://www.sce.com/outages-safety/outage-center/check-outage-status

Power outage safety tips:

1. Have a stash of supplies. To prepare for a power outage, it’s helpful to have spare batteries of all sizes and portable chargers, plus a flashlight for everyone in your home. To take it one step further, stock up on nonperishable food and bottled water.

2. Report the outage. Visit your utility provider’s website or mobile app or give them a call to report the outage as soon as possible and check for restoration status updates.

3. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep generators outside, at least 20 feet from windows, with the exhaust facing away from your home. And if you haven’t already, install a carbon monoxide detector with a battery backup on every level of your home. (Note: Feeling dizzy, weak, confused, or tired could be a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you start to feel any of these symptoms, get some fresh air immediately and call 911.)

4. Keep the fridge and freezer closed. Food will stay cold for up to four hours in an unopened refrigerator and up to 48 hours in an unopened freezer. When power returns, follow the adage of “when in doubt, throw it out” – especially if your refrigerator/freezer has been warmer than 40°F.

5. Turn off appliances and electronics. To protect your equipment from power surges, turn them off or unplug them.

Over the 24-hour period of July 4th, the California City Fire Department added additional personnel to staff Paramedic Engine 19, Paramedic Patrol 19, Paramedic Engine 319, and Command 19 in an anticipation of higher 911 call volume.

Throughout the day, our firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to a wide range of emergency incidents, including:

•A multifamily dwelling structure fire
•Multiple vegetation fires
•Dumpster fire near a structure
•Multiple medical-aid calls including the delivery of a healthy baby
•Pedestrian struck by a vehicle
•Illegal fireworks

Our Fire Marshal’s Office played a critical role in public safety efforts—conducting pre-holiday fire inspections across town to ensure compliance with safety standards.

The California City Fire Department extends our sincere gratitude to our public safety partners at the California City Police Department, Kern County Fire Department, Edwards Air Force Base Fire Department, Hall Ambulance, and the Red Cross for their unwavering support and teamwork.

We also want to acknowledge our 911 dispatchers, whose calm voices and coordinated responses helped manage an exceptionally high volume of calls. Their professionalism was key in navigating the chaos of a busy July 4th celebration.

We remain proud of the dedication and resilience shown by the entire public safety team and thank the community for their continued trust and support. Continue to have a safe and joyful weekend!

07/04/2025

As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate the birth of our great nation, we want to take a moment to wish everyone a safe and joyful Independence Day.

The 4th of July is a time for pride, reflection, and community. It's also a time when our crews stay especially vigilant to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities safely.

Let’s also be mindful of outdoor fire risks, especially during dry conditions. Keep grills attended, dispose of coals properly, and make sure your celebrations don’t spark unintended emergencies.

ONLY “Safe and Sane” fireworks have been legalized for sale and use in California City. Any fireworks that do not have the Fire Marshal seal of approval, or any fireworks that leave the ground or explode, are dangerous and illegal.

On behalf of the entire Fire Department, thank you for helping us keep our community safe. We are honored to serve you, today and every day.

Have a happy, safe, and meaningful 4th of July!

*Vegetation Fire Smoke and Odor ďżźAdvisory*
[7:15PM 6/13/2025]

Smoke and odor from a vegetation fire in Kern County (possibly from the Dogs Fire Incident) is drifting into California City and the surrounding areas. The fire is currently 8,500 acres in size. This fire does not pose a threat to California City and there is no active vegetation fires burning in California City.

Protect your health by avoiding exposure. If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside. Set air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside.

Smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, causing coughing, a dry scratchy throat and irritated sinuses. Elevated particulate matter in the air can trigger wheezing in those who suffer from asthma, emphysema or COPD.

Elderly persons, children and individuals with respiratory illnesses are particularly susceptible to elevated air pollution levels and should take extra precautions to avoid exposure.

Contact your health care provider if you experience any of the following symptoms:

• Repeated coughing
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Wheezing
• Chest tightness or pain
• Palpitations
• Nausea or unusual fatigue
• Lightheadedness

As always, if you or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911.

05/26/2025

As with every day, but especially Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave men and women who lost their lives serving our country. We also recognize the great sacrifices of their family and friends they have left.

Please have a safe Memorial Day and take a moment to honor those that served our nation.
❤️ 🤍 💙
