Today, we remember and pay tribute to Sergeant First Class (SFC) Raymond E. Hall, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War. On October 20, 1950, SFC Hall, a Mountain Ash, KY native, was killed near Sunchon, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in the “Sunchon Tunnel Massacre.” Captured as a prisoner of war, he was executed by enemy guards alongside 65 fellow U.S. POWs while being transported north.
U.S. Army personnel initially transported his remains to the United Nations Military Cemetery in Pyongyang for temporary interment. Following an exchange of war dead in 1956, SFC Hall was interred as Unknown X-17101 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency identified him through historical data and DNA analysis, bringing him home after decades of anonymity.
SFC Raymond E. Hall was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery on October 21, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in Section 18, grave 379. We honor his bravery, his sacrifice, and his long journey to his final resting place.
