🍂 THE SEASONS ARE CHANGING — IS YOUR HOME FIRE-SAFE? 🔥

Cooler mornings, chilly evenings, and falling temperatures mean many of us are turning to wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, and wood furnaces to keep our homes warm.

Before you light that first fire of the season, take a few minutes to make sure you’re ready!

🪵 WOOD-BURNING FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST

* Have your chimney inspected and cleaned. Creosote buildup can cause dangerous chimney fires.
* Check your wood stove and fireplace. Look for cracks, damaged components, and signs of wear.
* Burn only seasoned, dry firewood. Never burn trash, cardboard, or treated wood.
* Keep combustibles away. Maintain proper clearance between your stove or fireplace and furniture, curtains, firewood, and other flammable materials.
* Use a sturdy fireplace screen. Keep sparks and embers from escaping into your home.
* Dispose of ashes safely. Place ashes in a covered metal container, away from your home and anything combustible. Ashes can retain heat for days.
* Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure they work and are installed on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas, with smoke alarms inside bedrooms.
* Have an escape plan. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room and has an outdoor meeting place.

⚠️ Remember: Never leave a fire unattended, and never use a wood stove or fireplace to burn anything it wasn’t designed to handle.

🍁 As we welcome cooler weather, let’s make sure we’re keeping our families warm and safe.

Fire safety is a year-round responsibility, but every season brings new reminders to check our homes and protect the people we love.

🚒 Two Fire Departments. One Goal. Saving Lives. 🚒

This morning, members of the White Creek Fire Department and Cambridge Fire Department, with guidance from Fire Protection Specialist Tyson Converse of the NYS Community Risk Reduction Team, worked together to make a home safer.

Together, we installed smoke alarms on every level of the residence and in each sleeping area. We also tested the home’s existing smoke alarms to ensure they were working properly, reviewed important fire safety tips, and discussed the importance of having a practiced home fire escape plan.

Smoke alarms save lives, but working smoke alarms and a plan to get out make all the difference.

We are proud to work alongside our neighboring departments and community partners to reduce risks, educate residents, and help keep our communities safe.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026

CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY: SAFE CHARGING IS A SUPERPOWER

Fire Prevention Week is more than a week on the calendar. It is a reminder that fire prevention starts long before the fire department is called.

Every day, the choices we make in our homes can help prevent a fire — and give our families a better chance of getting out safely if one happens.

This week, take a few minutes to look around your home.

PREVENT FIRES:

• Charge phones, tablets, laptops and other devices on a hard, flat surface — never on a bed, couch or under a pillow.

• Use the charger and cord that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.

• Unplug devices when they are fully charged.

• Never use a battery or device that is swollen, damaged, leaking, unusually hot, smoking, or making popping or hissing sounds.

• Keep anything that can burn away from stoves, fireplaces, heaters and other sources of heat.

• Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of home fires.

• Keep electrical cords in good condition and don’t overload outlets or power strips.

• Keep portable heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.

• Have chimneys, furnaces and heating equipment inspected and maintained.

• Store matches, lighters and flammable materials safely and away from children.

• Never smoke in bed or near anything that can burn.

AND PLEASE — CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.

Working smoke alarms save lives.

Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them regularly. Replace batteries when needed and replace alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

A smoke alarm only helps if it works.

Then make a home escape plan.

Know two ways out of every bedroom. Make sure everyone in your household knows where to go. Pick an outside meeting place and practice your escape plan.

When a fire starts, you may have only minutes — sometimes less — to get out.

Firefighters will always respond when you call 911.

But our greatest success isn’t putting out the fire.

Our greatest success is preventing the fire from happening in the first place — and making sure everyone gets out safely when one does.

Fire prevention is not just one week a year.

Fire prevention is every day.

This Fire Prevention Week, take action. Check your smoke alarms. Practice your escape plan. Look for hazards. Charge safely. Talk to your family.

Be prepared. Be safe. Prevent fires.

When you hear the sirens…

Last night, our community was reminded of what those sirens really mean.

A barn fire. A property filled with hard work, memories, belongings and, in many cases, a livelihood—suddenly threatened or lost.

Our hearts go out to the property owners and everyone affected by last night’s fire. We know that what firefighters see as a structure fire is someone’s home, someone’s business, someone’s animals, someone’s memories and years of hard work. We may leave when the scene is under control, but the impact doesn’t end when the trucks leave.

The days of social media and lots of sirens are different. It’s easy to hear the sirens and wonder, “What’s going on?”

When you hear those sirens, pray. Send positive thoughts. Think about the people on the other end of that call.

Because behind every siren are people.

People who just left their families, their warm beds, their jobs and their own lives to respond to someone else’s worst day.

Last night, we are incredibly grateful for our own Cambridge Fire Department members who answered the call, and for the many mutual aid departments and firefighters who responded, worked alongside us and stayed until the job was done. Thank you Salem, Shushan, Arlington, Easton, Greenwich, Middle Falls, Buskirk, Johnsonville, White Creek, North Hoosick, Schuylerville, Hebron, NYSP, Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, our dispatcher, and our fire coordinators and investigators.

That is what the fire service does.

We show up.

We work together.

We help our neighbors when they need us most.

And sometimes, when you hear those sirens, someone is having one of the worst nights of their life.

So tonight, and every time you hear them, take a moment.

Pray for the people we’re going to help.
Think about the families affected.
Thank the firefighters who are responding.
Or maybe consider becoming one of them.

Because every siren represents a call for help—and behind that call is a neighbor who needs us.
