Last week, Lower Elementary continued their study of leaves and photosynthesis with a hands-on botany scavenger hunt at Mount Auburn. Students identified and classified various leaves from Mount Auburn’s over 5,500 trees, including some of the largest and oldest tree specimens in the country!

Earlier this month, Lower Elementary students traveled to Gaining Ground in Concord, Massachusetts, a nonprofit, no-till farm that grows organic produce exclusively for hunger relief. Students worked alongside Gaining Ground farmers and volunteers, helping with seasonal farm tasks such as planting, cultivating, harvesting, mulching, and washing produce.

The trip connected naturally to the botany studies students are beginning in the classroom, giving them an opportunity to work directly with plants, soil, and the processes that bring food from the earth to our communities. It also extends an important idea within Montessori Cosmic Education: that each of us has a role to play in the larger community and a responsibility to contribute to the world around us. By helping grow food for people experiencing food insecurity, students can see firsthand the interdependencies between people, the land, and the many individuals whose work helps sustain our communities.

Our Middle School kicked off the year with three days of adventure, connection, and community at La Vida Adventure Pursuits in Wenham. Through teambuilding challenges, a high-ropes course, kayaking, and apple picking, students had opportunities to laugh, challenge themselves, and get to know one another. As they shared new experiences and worked together, they began building the strong, supportive community that is at the heart of Montessori adolescence — learning to rely on one another while developing independence, confidence, and responsibility.

We had such a wonderful time representing Cambridge Montessori School at the Boston Area School Fair!

It was an incredible opportunity to connect with other schools, catch up with familiar faces, and make new connections within the local independent school community. We always appreciate the chance to share more about our Montessori approach and the vibrant community we’ve built at CMS.

Thank you to everyone who braved the rain to visit with us and learn more about Cambridge Montessori School. We loved seeing you!

Our first Community Lunch of the school year!

Working together, three of our Upper Elementary students plan the menu, choose recipes, create their shopping list, shop for ingredients, and prepare the meal from start to finish.

Before sitting down to eat, our chefs present an ingredient from the menu, answer questions from their classmates, and serve the meal to their community.

Along the way, students practice independence, collaboration, responsibility, communication, problem-solving, and care for one another—all through meaningful, purposeful work.

This is Montessori in action: children learning not just about their community, but how to actively contribute to it.

Our Toddler and Primary classrooms are filled with the quiet rhythm of children exploring, and working deep in concentration.

The classroom finds its rhythm through the children themselves as they follow their interests, work with purpose, and discover what they are ready and eager to do for themselves!

Today, on what would have been Dr. Maria Montessori’s 156th birthday, the CMS community celebrates the remarkable woman who dedicated her life to understanding, respecting, and serving children.

More than a century later, her vision continues to inspire educators and transform the lives of children around the world. We are grateful to carry her legacy forward each day as we nurture curiosity, independence, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.” - Dr. Maria Montessori
