πŸ“ŠπŸŒ World Statistics Day

October 20 is the date the United Nations set aside for World Statistics Day, a nod to the people and systems that turn raw numbers into evidence the rest of us can trust. The most recent theme, β€œDriving change with quality statistics and data for everyone,” describes so much of the work happening in MIT research groups right now.

At MIT, statistics has had an Institute-wide home since 2015 at the Statistics and Data Science Center within IDSS; this center runs the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Statistics and the Minor in Statistics and Data Science. To all of you doing statistical work in your own field, consider this a day to appreciate the methods behind the findings! πŸ“ŠπŸ”₯

βš›οΈπŸ” Scattering Neutrinos to Probe the Fundamental Laws of the Universe

Shoutout to Faith Reyes, a sixth-year physics PhD student in the Formaggio Group at MIT Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, on her MIT News feature! πŸ‘

Reyes studies neutrinos, tiny particles that barely interact with ordinary matter. She works on Ricochet, an international experiment at a reactor in Grenoble, France, that measures how neutrinos bounce off atomic nuclei, work that could help reveal physics beyond the Standard Model.

As the experiment grew from two detectors to 18, she and a colleague built software to automate much of the routine analysis and monitoring, which gave her a more central role in the collaboration.
