When it’s Wildlife Wednesday AND National Reptile Day, we have to feature our favorite….

🐍 Small snake, BIG defense- The California Kingsnake

We were very excited to spot this tiny California kingsnake making its way through the park! While it may be little now (hard to tell, but this babe was about the circumference of a pencil), California kingsnakes are known for something pretty incredible—they have a natural resistance to rattlesnake venom.

That’s especially handy because kingsnakes are known to prey on other snakes, including rattlesnakes. They’re nonvenomous constrictors and help keep populations of rodents, lizards, and other animals in check!

We’re hoping to see this little one in the future as it continues to get nice a big 🐍😍

⚠️ Portions of White Cliffs Trail and Shady Acres Trail are currently now part of the Verde River and will be closed until the water recedes ⚠️

On a high note- all this rain has been great for our pollinator garden 🌸 so we highly recommend taking this time to hike Pasture Loop trail, which isn’t under water 🤠

Glad we could be a part of Flagstaff Festival of Science! Thanks Southwest Monarch Study 🥰

It’s the last day of September, which is officially recognized as Planting for Monarchs Month in Arizona, to support the migrating butterfly population 🌱

Now is still a good time to plant! You want to have essential larval host plants (where caterpillars feed and grow), such as milkweeds, as well was nectar-rich plants 🌸 (which provide fuel for adult migration), such as globemallow, verbena, and daisies!
