At 3 pm on Sunday October 11, 2026, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue and NH State Police responded to a reported motor vehicle accident on I-93 Northbound in Campton near Mile Marker 82.

Ambulance 2 and Car 1 responded. Crews were advised by Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid dispatchers, that a caller to New Hampshire 911 reported a vehicle traveling Southbound, had gone off the roadway, rolled over and was now located upside down on the Northbound lane, with reports of two patients.

Upon arrival, crews located 2 patients, out of the vehicle, both of whom had suffered injuries requiring ambulance transport. A mutual aid ambulance from Plymouth Fire-Rescue was requested and responded. A few moments later, additional personnel from CTFD also responded with Ambulance 1.

The high speed lane was shut down while crews worked at the scene. As the second CTFD Ambulance had responded, the Plymouth Ambulance was released and returned to service. CTFD ambulances transported both patients to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

The vehicle was removed and the roadway was reopened a short time later. The incident created a significant traffic backup.

At 1:40 pm on Thursday, October 8, 2026, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue, with Automatic Aid from Holderness, NH Fire Department and Sandwich Fire Department, were called to the Mount Morgan trail for an injured hiker.

Upon response, Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid dispatchers advised that they received a 3rd party call reporting that a hiker had fallen and injured their wrist. They had limited information about location or condition of the patient. They advised the caller to have the patient call New Hampshire 911 to ascertain more direct info and a set of coordinates.

Holderness and Sandwich personnel established a staging area at the parking lot on Route 113, and sent in crews to assist the patient. Simultaneously, additional information was relayed that the patient was moving under their own power down the trail.

At around 4 pm, the patient and EMS personnel reached the trailhead and they were treated for their injuries before being transported by CTFD Ambulance to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth for treatment of their injuries. It should be noted that the hiker was adequately prepared.

Remaining companies returned to service a short time later.

We would like to thank our neighbors for their assistance during this incident.

Chief Daniel Defosses said "the willingness of our mutual aid partners to assist us in the remote portions of our coverage area, greatly expedite the treatment of patients in need." He went on to say "this incident highlights the importance of dialing 911 during an emergency, and ascertaining a correct location of the emergency is crucial to proper response."

Thornton: On Tuesday the 22nd at 1:15 AM Conservation Officers were made aware of an overdue hiker from Johnson Brook Road in Thornton. A 68 year old Male had gone for a hike from his residence sometime on the 21st and had not returned as expected by family. With temperatures in the mid forties a rescue effort was organized. Conservation Officers who had just concluded the Owl’s Head carryout along with members of the Thornton Police Department, Campton/Thornton Fire Rescue, Plymouth Fire-Rescue, New England K-9, and the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team responded to the area. A search of local trails and the wooded area around the residence commenced by 2:30 AM. Drones and canines were utilized during this search.

At 7:30 AM the missing man was located about a quarter of a mile from his residence by a canine from New England K-9. The missing man, identified as Michael Ramos, was uninjured and brought out to meet his family. Ramos was unaware anyone was looking for him and had planned an overnight stay in the woods. This rescue effort emphasizes the need to leave a detailed plan with someone.

The Hiker responsibility code advises that you are responsible for yourself, so be prepared to leave your plans. Tell someone where you are going, the trails you are hiking, when you’ll return and your emergency plans. For more information on the Hiker Responsibility Code visit www.hikesafe.com.
