We have started to see a few cases of flu in the community. Typically once that happens, Thompson Health Director of Infection Prevention Stacey Gibbs says, it starts to ramp up within a few weeks. Our Pharmacy Services Department has scheduled another vaccine clinic so you can start building your immunity for this season. It’s set for Friday, October 23, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Notre Dame Retreat House, 5151 Foster Road in Canandaigua.
This clinic is for ages 3 and up. A high-dose option, with additional antigen to create a stronger immune response, will be available to those 65 and up.
No registration is necessary for the clinic. Attendees are asked to bring their identification and their prescription drug coverage information.

As you may have heard on the news, the governor this week declared a statewide health emergency following a surge in measles cases, including cases in Ontario and surrounding counties. It’s important to know that for several months already, Thompson Health has been partnering closely with the state Department of Health and our local health departments to prepare for and respond to measles in our region.
Thompson Health Director of Infection Prevention Stacey Gibbs says for most individuals who have received the recommended MMR vaccinations, the risk of measles remains very low.
“We continue to monitor the situation closely and ask community members with a known measles exposure to notify the healthcare facility by phone before arriving for care,” she said.
For example, if someone has an appointment with their physician and has had a known measles exposure, they should call the office and inform staff of the exposure before coming in. We also ask that anyone with a known exposure or uncertain immunity who is experiencing symptoms call from outside our Urgent Care locations before entering so appropriate precautions can be put in place.
An important thing to remember, according to Gibbs, is that measles is a vaccine-preventable illness, and Thompson Health continues to offer vaccination through our primary care practices for eligible individuals.
The long and short of it? “Be aware, know your MMR status, call ahead if exposed, and get vaccinated if eligible.”

Should you get a flu shot this year? Should your kids? Is RSV a big deal? Are COVID boosters still a thing? In the latest episode of Thompson On-Air, host Dave Carro talks with Stacey Gibbs, Thompson Health’s Director of Infection Prevention, and Daniel Bentz, the Clinical Pharmacist who manages our two outpatient pharmacies, about what respiratory virus season looks like this year, including:
• Why Australia’s flu season gives us a preview of our own, and why this year’s vaccine is well matched.
• How to tell flu, RSV, COVID, and the common cold apart, and why testing early impacts treatment.
• Who is most at risk of serious complications like pneumonia.
• Which vaccines are recommended for which ages, and why September and October are the target months.
• Why adults 65+ should ask for the high-dose or ‘adjuvanted’ flu vaccine.
• The warning signs that it is time to call your provider or go to the emergency department.
Stacey and Daniel also clear up one of the most common myths our pharmacists hear – that you can get the flu from the flu shot. Listen now at www.ThompsonHealth.com/Podcast, where you’ll also find links to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeartRadio.
