Observed each year on the third Friday in September, POW/MIA Recognition Day honors the brave men and women who were prisoners of war and those still missing in action. It is a solemn reminder that freedom carries a cost measured not only in sacrifice but in uncertainty—the long wait for answers, the enduring hope of families, and the steadfast promise of a nation that will never forget. Across America, the black‑and‑white POW/MIA flag flies as a symbol of that promise: You Are Not Forgotten.

Our Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial flies the POW/MIA flag 365 days a year. On Wednesday our city council made a POW/MIA Recognition Day Proclamation. If you wish to learn more about the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial check out our website https://vietnameravetsmemorial.com/

Patriot Day - September 11: The Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial has lowered its flags to half staff in honor of Patriots Day.

Observed each year on September 11, honors the memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of 2001 and pays tribute to the courage of first responders, service members, and everyday citizens who answered the call in our nation’s darkest hour.

It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the strength that emerges when Americans stand united against fear and adversity.

We celebrated the life of Vietnam Veteran Michael Breshears today at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial. The near 100 attendees were welcomed with a musical prelude by Dr. J's Brass Quintet. MC Jonathan Miller opened the celebration, Pastor Larry Parks gave the invocation, and Carter Reed (CHS 2026 graduate) sang "America".

The program consisted of the Lewis & Clark Young Marines doing an Iwo Jima Flag raising, Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient Ron Cannon speaking, Past Canby Librarian Beth Saul speaking, and Vietnam Veteran 4-time Purple Heart Recipient (and Leave It to Beaver child TV Star) Gary Hunley speaking.

The program concluded with Taps and a Benediction. Burgerville treated all attendees to a marionberry sundae and lemonade. We appreciate all the veterans and members of the community who attended and those who attended in spirit.

Veterans and community members, please join us on Saturday, August 15 at 11am to say farewell to one of our Vietnam Veterans at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial. Mike Breshears was one of the leaders in building the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial. He passed away a few weeks ago and we want to have a short celebration of his life. So many of our Vietnam Veterans were not recognized for their sacrifice when they came home. Let's be sure we recognize them now and celebrate all Vietnam Veterans through Mike. After the ceremony Burgerville is giving out ice cream sunday's to all who attended.

We will be placing flags on Thursday at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial to celebrate our 250th birthday.

Independence Day stands as a reminder of the moment a group of
determined colonists chose the difficult path toward self‑governance, staking everything on the belief that liberty was worth the risk. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, asserting that the American colonies were no longer subject to the British Crown. It was more than a political break — it was a statement of values: that people have inherent rights, that government must be accountable to the governed, and that freedom demands both courage and sacrifice.

Those principles still echo today, especially for veterans and families who understand the cost of defending them.
For the Veterans of Foreign Wars community, Independence Day
carries a special weight. The fireworks, parades, and gatherings are
symbols of a nation that has endured because generations of service members stepped forward when called.

The freedoms celebrated on the Fourth of July were secured not only in 1776 but on every battlefield where Americans have served since. It’s a day to honor the legacy of those who fought for independence, those who preserved it, and those who continue to safeguard it today. As we raise our flags and spend time with our communities, we remember that liberty is never guaranteed — it is upheld by the dedication, resilience, and unity of the American people
