The Can-Kan Friends of the Library has accomplished many fundraisers. The biggest fundraiser is the Little Miss and Mr. Christmas contest that is held annually. Donations for the library go towards a child in the contest and the girl and boy that collects the most wins the title of Little Miss and Mr. Christmas.

With recent donations, Can-Kan has contributed to matching grants for the following: large print books, furnishings and new computers.

They also help the library purchase Halloween books and popcorn that are given out during Trick or Treat the Library, along with providing the snacks for Summer Reading.

After nearly 10 years of bake sales, pancake dinners and more, the new library opened in 2016. The Can-Kan Dreambuilders became the Can-Kan Friends of the Library, changing the mission of the group to supporting the library. They have provided snacks for programs, volunteered at the library and held fundraisers for library needs.

We are so excited celebrate the National Friends of the Library week!

To start the week off let's talk about the history of Can-Kan Friends of the Library.

Can-Kan Dreambuilders, now Can-Kan Friends of the Library, was founded in 2005 by three dedicated members of the community: Joan Gordon, Joyce McDaniel and Sharon Wiggins. Their hard work and determination turned the dream of a new library building into a reality when in May of 2015, ground was broke on the site of the new library.

Little Miss and Mr. Christmas Contest 2026

The Can-Kan Friends of the Library invite children ages 4-6 to help raise money for new computers at the Caney City Library by running for the title of Little Miss and Mr. Christmas of 2026.

Coronation will be the night of the Caney Christmas Parade in front of the Montgomery County Chronicle office and there will be a float for the children to ride on afterward. Children must be 4, 5 or 6 years of age by Oct 1st, 2026 and reside in the USD 436 school district. Voting will be done by donating toward the library; donation boxes will be set up at the library. The girl and boy who collects the most money for the library will be crowned Little Miss and Mr. Christmas of 2026. This is a great way for the community to support the library!

Applications were sent home with students and are also available at the library. Completed applications and photos can be dropped off at the library (if closed, they can be put in the book drop on the south side of the building), or emailed to [email protected]. Applications must be turned into the library by Monday, November 9th.

The 1st and 2nd place winners will not be able to participate the following year. Each applicant’s parent/guardian will be contacted to review the information. Voting will start November 16th and will end December 1st. All voting will be done at the library.

A list of contestants will be posted in the library, in the local paper and on the Caney City Library page. The Can-Kan Friends of the Library welcomes your participation as a contestant and voter. Please come out to support your community and have fun doing it! For more information, questions, or an application, please contact the library at 620-879-5341.
