We acknowledge that the lands and waters in the Mojave are the traditional ancestral homelands of Indigenous sovereign nations. We recognize the enduring relationship these nations have with their lands, and the deep cultural, spiritual, and historical connections that have existed for time immemorial. We honor the stewardship of these lands by Indigenous peoples and commit to building respectful, collaborative relationships with Tribal governments and communities. We honor past, present and futre generations.

Valentines in October!
The Desert Tortoise is feeling frisky this time of year! They are looking for mates and the males are showing off to get the females attention. When you are out riding, be sure to keep an eye out for tortoises’ cruising around looking for love. Watch out for burrows where the females will be laying eggs and where they will hibernate for the winter.
A few interesting facts:
• The Desert Tortoise is the California State reptile.
• They can live to be 80-100 years old.
• As a keystone species, the burrows they create are used by multiple other species.
• Tortoise’s are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species as globally critically endangered.

Dirty mud layered OHVs are a sign of a good time had. Before you hit the next trail, be sure to wash that mud off. This is key in helping stop the spread of invasive plants and grasses.

ACTION: report locations of this plant to park staff and rangers.
One non-native plant to watch for is Stinknet. This plant is listed in our “early detection, rapid response” program. It grows up to 2 feet tall, has yellow globe-shaped flowerheads and no petals. They only have one flower at each stem but it holds more than 250 seeds. Research suggests that one flower can have over 2,000 seeds. The problem with this plants: it spreads rapidly, grows in dense patches that outcompete native plants and is highly flammable which increases wildfire risks.
