We've made it to another weeks Field Photo Friday! 🫎

Today we have a fun one! We're sharing a great photo of a Moose taken by Aaron, our Forester! Although Moose are rare in our county, they do travel through our county and live primarily in the Adirondack park. These places have the right habitat for moose by being a mix of wetlands and boreal forests. 🌲
-
We've highlighted St. Lawrence County in this great NYS Department of Environmental Conservation resource we found which maps out sightings of moose over the course of multiple years.

Do you know what watershed you live in? Do you know what happens to the pesticides you may spray on your walk way? Well, the students at Trout and Heron Independent School now know the answers to these questions!! Last week our manager Alivia and intern Alyssa had fun teaching about watersheds and pollution! 💧🌎🌦️
-
When visiting Trout and Heron Independent School our staff lead students through an interactive, watershed stream table! Students got to see first hand how pollution upstream will impact the watershed as a whole. Students asked very intelligent questions and began hypothesizing ways to minimize pollution! 🏭
-
As a group we saw the affects of pollution and water surge with, and without wetlands. Students were very impressed with how much wetlands do to filter and buffer our water! 🦆
-
Thank you Trout and Heron Independent School for the fun opportunity to educate and inspire! Want us to bring our interactive watershed stream table to your classroom? Give us or call at: 315-386-3582 or email [email protected]

Partner with The Nature Conservancy in New York to plant trees on your land! 🌲

🤔 Did you know? The best time to plant a tree is now. The Nature Conservancy in New York is teaming up with landowners like you to protect and improve forest health throughout the state. Whether you own one fifth of an acre or more than 50 acres, we have tree planting opportunities that will fit your needs.

The Nature Conservancy’s new reforestation program offers landowners in St Lawrence County native trees and tree protection at no-cost to the landowner. By participating in our program, you’ll receive:

✔️ Trees at no cost to you

✔️ Project guidance from our local experts

✔️ Assistance with tree installation

✔️ Follow-up support after tree planting

Planting trees will improve local wildlife habitat, support cleaner air and water, and create a healthy environment for you and your community to enjoy. Over the next few years, The Nature Conservancy hopes to plant more than 1,000 acres of land with up to 500,000 trees in New York. They're working to scale these efforts to drastically increase tree planting and help reach New York State’s 2040 tree planting goal.

Interested in participating? ➡️ To get started or learn more, St. Lawrence County residents should contact the St. Lawrence Soil and Water Conservation District. Call: 315-386-3582 or email [email protected] for assistance.

Melissa has been part of the team for three years, working as our Secretary/Assistant Treasurer. She wears a lot of hats around the office, from handling day-to-day office duties and keeping QuickBooks in order, to taking care of banking and making sure things behind the scenes keep running. She is also always willing to jump in and help the other staff with their duties. 💻
-
When she’s not at work, Melissa is a wife as well as a mom to her 7 year old daughter. She loves spending time with her family, going camping, spending time on the water, watching sports (most likely hockey), and enjoying the simple things that make great memories. If there’s a campsite, a hockey game, or family time involved, chances are Melissa is happy to be there.🏒⛺

It's time for another week of Field Photo Friday!! Today, we feature an interesting animal encounter from wetland monitoring field work this summer. Can you spot all 6 herons on their nesting tree? 🪾🪺🪶
-
This was so cool to come up upon in the middle of tromping through a wetland! Male Great Blue Herons will collect sticks, reeds, and other materials and bring them to the female who then weaves the nest together. Nest sizes can vary and can take days to weeks to create. Their eggs are a pale blue and have clutch sizes are 2-6 eggs.
-
Hope you enjoyed a few fun facts about Great Blue Herons, wishing everyone a great weekend! 🪺

Allycia started her journey with us in July of last year (2025) as a District Technician and has made a huge impact on the team already, always brainstorming new avenues for the district to pursue. We are so happy to share the office with such a positive and knowledgeable team member.

Allycia is our go-to gal for all things agriculture; she has also been a major influence in the Districts' community outreach and education initiatives; spearheading the Districts' conservation newsletter and attending the local Farmer's Markets. Outside of work, Allycia likes to stay busy chasing her children, camping, gardening, and spending as much time with friends and family as she can. We are happy to have Allycia on our team.

Happy Friday! We made it to our next Field Photo Friday 🌾🐄

Today we are featuring some common field views for our District Technician Allycia. When working on Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) plans, taking soil samples, or working on the various other Ag related work, these are some common plants seen in fields and pastures!
-
Pictured are some cattle grazing in their pasture, Red Clover, Dandelion seeds tangled up in a beautiful spiders web, and Field Horsetail. Even the smallest plants have a purpose! 🌾☘️

We have gotten some new followers so we thought we'd run through some introductions for our team!! 🌻🎣

First up, Alivia Bleau! Alivia is the District Manager for the St. Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District and has been with the District for just over two years. As District Manager, she works closely with the Board of Directors on program and organization decisions, supports staff, and lends a hand wherever needed to keep the District's work moving forward.

With a background in Conservation Biology, she enjoys working with people and natural resources and helping care for the land, water, and communities that make St. Lawrence County home.

When Alivia isn't at work, you can usually find her at home in the woods, where she lives off-grid with her toddler and dog, or out birding, paddling, fly fishing, jumping in puddles with her kid, and generally finding any excuse to be outside.
