Fire Prevention!

Throughout the week, members of the Canton Fire Department visited Canton Banford School and the Siena School to teach children about fire safety. Their lessons included the importance of smoke detectors, knowing two ways to exit a building, choosing a meeting place, how to call 911, and seeing and hearing firefighters in full turnout gear.

The fire prevention activities at Canton Banford School concluded on Friday, when the winners of the smoke detector contest received a ride to school in a fire truck. That same afternoon, Canton Fire and Rescue, along with Canton Police, responded to the school for a drill. During the drill, children watched as firefighters and firetrucks quickly responded, giving them a firsthand look at emergency operations.

Parents are encouraged to work with their children on creating escape plans and choosing a meeting place in case of an emergency at home.

Fire Prevention Week Is Off and Running

Fire Prevention activities are underway here in Canton. Monday October 5th, fire dog Jax did some community visits to hand out fire safety information at the Canton Housing Authority High Rises and at Law Lane. Dorm Fire Satey information was given out to the St. Lawrence University and Canton College communities. On Tuesday firefighters visited the Canton Banford School for in school assemblies where students learned about the three P's of fire safety; Planning, Practice and Prevention. Students were able to see a firefighter dressed in full turnout gear and hear the sounds firefighters make breathing from the air packs they wear on their backs. Fire Prevention Week

Happy Fire Prevention Week from all of us at the Canton Fire Department! 🚒

From October 5–9, 2026, we’re highlighting simple, everyday habits that keep our neighborhoods safe. Take a few minutes today to walk through these essential safety checks:

1- Check Your Alarms: Test every smoke detector in your home and replace aging batteries. Smoke detectors have a 10 year life. Look for the date on the back of the detector and replace it if it has reached its 10th birthday.

2- Map Two Ways Out: Ensure every room has at least two clear, unblocked escape paths.

3- Practice the Plan: Walk through your family’s escape route together so everyone knows what to do if an emergency strikes.

Two Car MVA

At approximately 17:15 hours, Canton Fire Department and Canton Rescue units, including Car 4, were dispatched to a reported two-vehicle motor vehicle accident. Initial dispatch information indicated one injured party with no occupant entrapment.
Canton Ambulance 132 arrived first on the scene, immediately establishing a medical sector and initiating patient assessment. Shortly thereafter, command vehicles 4-1 and 4-2 arrived to assume incident command and coordinate operational response.
Upon arrival of secondary command personnel, active scene safety and traffic management protocols were established. Fire personnel promptly deployed traffic control measures around the collision perimeter to mitigate secondary collision risks, protect operating emergency personnel, and maintain steady traffic flow to prevent congestion and delays along the corridor. Rescue 1 arrived on scene to assist with physical hazard abatement and roadway cleanup. Crew members cleared collision debris, glass, and residual vehicular fluids from the travel lanes, ensuring the roadway was fully safe for normal vehicular travel.

EMS personnel from Ambulance 132 conducted a primary and secondary survey of the injured occupant. Responders confirmed that no mechanical extrication was required. After initial stabilization on scene, the patient was prepared for transport. Ambulance 132 departed the scene non-delayed, transporting the individual to the local receiving hospital for further evaluation and definitive medical care.
Following the departure of the transport unit and the safe clearance of the roadway, command was terminated, and all Canton Fire and Rescue units cleared the scene and returned to service.

Saint Lawrence University Club Fair

On behalf of the Canton Fire Department, we would like to thank St. Lawrence University for welcoming us back to this year's Student Club Fair.

Our Recruitment and Retention team had a great time connecting with students, distributing applications, and sharing what it takes to serve as a volunteer firefighter in our community. Members of our department also conducted a live dorm room fire demonstration to highlight fire safety and prevention on campus.

A big thank you to all the firefighters who took the time to participate today and help make this event a success!

Grain Bin Fire and MVA

At 15:02, Canton Fire Department, Canton Rescue, and SLC Car 4 were dispatched to Bordeau Bros for a reported fire in a grain bin. Assistant Chief Johnson arrived on scene within minutes and confirmed an active fire in an overhead grain bin silo, and assumed command of the incident. Due to the increased risk of possible escalation, command requested mutual aid from Potsdam Fire for Tower 5 (as Canton Tower 1 was out of service for repairs) and tankers from Potsdam Fire, West Potsdam Fire, Pierrepont Fire, and Pyrites Fire. It was decided by command, in consultation with facility personnel, to empty the grain bin in order to reach and extinguish the burning material. All units cleared the scene at 18:08.

At 16:15, a motor vehicle accident occurred in front of the fire incident on Route 11 involving a car and tractor trailer. Canton Fire and Rescue, along with mutual aid units, responded to the scene. Traffic was temporarily rerouted around the area until the roadway was cleared. All units cleared the motor vehicle accident call at 17:56.
