What’s better than a sunny fall afternoon? A sunny fall afternoon with baby goats! 🐐 Orchard Cove celebrated the season with its annual Fall Festival Residents had a great time visiting with six-week-old Nigerian dwarf goats and alpacas from Bracken Hill Farm in Northborough, cuddling, petting, and posing for pictures with the animals.

Staff and residents also enjoyed an outdoor lunch featuring veggie chili, hot dogs fresh off the grill, chips, and apple c***r donuts. Drinks included local beers and c***rs from Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co., Carlson Orchards, and Jack's Abby Craft La**rs, as well as hot and cold apple c***r.

Journalist Mark Oppenheimer, author of "Judy Blume: A Life," visited Orchard Cove to discuss the prolific writer's career and how, over the course of 55 years, her work rewired the world's expectations of what literature for young readers could be.

Oppenheimer is the creator and former host of "Unorthodox," Tablet Magazine's podcast about Jewish life and culture, and the host of "Arc: The Podcast" for the online journal Arc: Religion, Politics, Et Cetera.

He first met Blume after writing the 1997 New York Times essay "Why Judy Blume Endures," and while researching the biography, he interviewed Blume, her children, her husband, and about 100 acquaintances. He also read through 130 boxes of documents Blume had donated to Yale University.

"She had a tremendous creative drive, and it was going unfulfilled," Oppenheimer said, noting that before she began writing, Blume had tried her hand at composing music and creating visual art.

Blume took a "writing for children" night class at the New York University extension school, where she started writing "Iggie's House." It was the first of 10 books written between 1970 and 1975, followed by titles like "Freckle Juice," "Blubber," and "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret."

The latter "is a really beautiful story of personal development in every possible way. This book was not an instant success, but it slowly grew through word of mouth. Within a year or two, it was popular enough to already be challenged and banned at many high school and middle school libraries across the country," Oppenheimer said.

He said many of Blume's books became classics, often selling millions of copies. With more than 90 million books sold, Blume is the best-selling female Jewish author ever.

"She showed that the field of young adult literature and children's literature was so popular, bookstores and publishers started demanding more of it," Oppenheimer said, noting that bookstores did not have children's or young adult sections before Blume.

Oppenheimer was introduced by Orchard Cove resident Judith Klau, whom he first met when he was a student at the Loomis Chaffee School. Klau interviewed him during the school's accreditation process, and the two discovered they lived one street apart in the Forest Park area of Springfield, Massachusetts.

"We ended up having a wonderful conversation. Over the years, after I graduated from college and began writing, from time to time, I would get a note from her. When I began hosting a podcast about Jewish life and culture, she was a listener and came to at least one of our live tapings. It's been a wonderful friendship," he said.

Senior researcher Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone provided Orchard Cove residents with an update on the Healthy Aging Initiative, a longitudinal cohort study by Hebrew SeniorLife's Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research. Many Orchard Cove residents are participants in the study.

The Healthy Aging Initiative is looking at diverse populations of older adults to identify key factors and individual predictors of lifelong health and well-being, determine factors influencing disease onset and progression that may lead to impairments and disabilities, and explore risk indicators for specific illnesses.

"It makes a big difference — hopefully for you and certainly for science," Dr. Pascual-Leone said.

He shared findings on how loneliness affects well-being and the aging process.

"Feeling alone is really bad for health," Dr. Pascual-Leone said, noting that the study shows older adults who feel lonely have about half the overall health and well-being, about a third of the cognitive function, and about a third of the mental well-being of those who don't feel alone.

"To put it more provocatively, feeling lonely actually kills. It shortens life expectancy by 26 percent," he said. "To put it even more provocatively, it is equivalent to smoking 15 ci******es per day."

The study examined how moving into a continuing care retirement community like Orchard Cove affects feelings of loneliness. About 80% of participants were neither lonely nor network-limited.

"That is great. That is where we want you to be," Dr. Pascual-Leone said. "However, it turns out moving into Orchard Cove or a similar community by itself is not enough, but having a sense of belonging to the community you live in does reduce the sense of loneliness."

Residents can build that sense of belonging by getting involved — showing up for activities and connecting with the people around them.

"Because I deal with brain plasticity and the capacity of the brain to change, fake it until you make it. If you feel lonely, start participating, because it will make a difference," he said.

Dr. Pascual-Leone described Orchard Cove as "an amazing place that encourages and offers those things."

The update came as part of Orchard Cove's monthly community meeting. Orchard Cove Executive Director Aline Russotto thanked the Healthy Aging Initiative team for their ongoing work and connection to the community.

"Alvaro has had such a deep impact on our community as we continue to shape the theme of brain health and what it means as we age," Russotto said. Dr. Pascual-Leone is also the medical director of Hebrew SeniorLife’s Deanna and Sidney Wolk Center for Memory Health.

You don’t have to be an Orchard Cove resident to participate — the study is open to local adults ages 55 and older. This research was supported by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health. Public investment in science makes discoveries like this possible — advancing care and helping older adults live healthier, more independent lives.
