It's Library Card Sign-Up Month, and there's no better time to remember one of the quiet giants who helped make this library what it is today: Don Lilja.
Don was born in 1925 to Swedish immigrant parents and grew up on a Canyonville farm, the same land where Knoll Terrace sits today. Raising milk cows, chickens, turkeys, and prunes with his five siblings. He graduated from Canyonville High School, joined the Navy, and served in both WWII and the Korean conflict before returning home to ranch cattle and carry the mail on the Riddle rural route for many years.
Don never sought credit, but his fingerprints are all over South County. Libraries were especially important to him. He believed deeply in children's programs and getting books into kids' hands, a belief that still shapes what this library can offer today. He also championed 4-H and FFA kids at the livestock auctions and quietly served on the boards of the county fair, Pioneer Days, the historical society, the water district, and the fire district. He was a founding board member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.
In 1994, Don and his sister Helen created the Lilja Family Fund through the Oregon Community Foundation. The fund still provides scholarships, supports local schools, libraries, 4-H/FFA, the food bank, the museum, and more, decades later.
Don passed away in 2001, but his belief in what a library card can open up for anyone lives on every time someone in this community signs up for one. This September, as we celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, we're honored to carry that legacy forward.
