Over the last few weeks, Cape Elizabeth Fire-Rescue members had a great opportunity to sharpen their skills by training on a donated structure before it is demolished.

Having access to a real structure provides invaluable hands-on training that closely replicates the conditions firefighters may encounter during an actual emergency. Crews were able to practice a variety of fireground skills, including advancing hose lines, fire attack, searching, ventilation, forcible entry, ladder operations, command tactics, and more.

We are incredibly grateful to the property owners for donating the structure and allowing our members to use it for training. Opportunities like this help us stay prepared, build confidence, and better serve the Cape Elizabeth community!

⚠️⚠️UPDATE⚠️⚠️

Mitchell Road is now open to traffic, thank you for your patience

Mitchell Road is currently closed between Belfield Road and Stonegate due to a tree and power lines being down.

08/14/2026

Yesterday, a powerful microburst moved through Cape Elizabeth, causing significant damage throughout town. The storm brought down numerous trees and power poles, blocked roadways, and caused structural damage, including trees through homes.

A record wind gust of 80 MPH was recorded at Pond Cove, highlighting just how powerful this storm was.

During the 24-hour period, your Cape Elizabeth Fire/Rescue members responded to approximately 50 calls for service, ranging from downed power lines and trees blocking roadways to trees that had fallen onto homes.

To meet the increased demand, members stepped up to staff additional apparatus at Cape Cottage Station and Town Center Station ensuring emergency coverage remained available when portions of town were temporarily cut off by trees across the roads. An Emergency Operations Center was also established to coordinate storm response efforts.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication and professionalism shown by our members during this challenging event. We also want to thank CMP and DPW, and everyone who worked alongside us to help Cape Elizabeth recover.

Please continue to use caution around downed trees and power lines, and never approach or touch a downed power line.

Thank you to our community for your patience and support as we continue working to keep Cape Elizabeth safe. 🚒🌳⚡

Annual Pump Testing Complete 🚒💦Yesterday, Greenwood Emergency Vehicles conducted our annual NFPA pump testing on all of our pumper apparatus. This yearly testing is required to ensure each fire engine’s pump is operating safely and meets the performance standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). During the process, each apparatus is put through a series of tests to verify it can deliver the required water flow and pressure when called upon during emergencies. Routine inspections and testing like this help ensure our equipment is always ready to serve the Cape Elizabeth community. A big thank you to Greenwood Emergency Vehicles for helping us keep our apparatus in peak operating condition.🚒 Always ready. Always prepared!

NEWS RELEASE (5/25/26) South Portland Restaurant Damaged by Fire

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – At 8:37 PM on May 24, 2026, the South Portland Fire Department responded to Makoto Sushi Bar and Grill, located at 448 Cottage Road, for a reported fire alarm activation.

The building was occupied at the time of the incident. Those present exited when alerted to the fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke inside the restaurant. Firefighters quickly located a fire in the ceiling area near the kitchen exhaust hood system. The fire was extinguished promptly; however, significant damage was sustained to the kitchen and portions of the roof. No injuries were reported. The business is expected to remain closed for an extended period while repairs are completed.

Fire Chief Phil Selberg said, “Early notification from the automatic alarm system, combined with the quick response by South Portland and mutual aid crews, helped limit the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of all.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Crews from the Cape Elizabeth and Portland Fire Departments assisted at the scene. Additional station coverage was provided by the Portland and Scarborough Fire Departments.
