***DRUG TAKE BACK DAY***

Swing by the Cape Elizabeth Police Department on Saturday, October 24th between 10:00am to 2:00pm to dispose of your unused or unwanted medications. We will have a tent set up on Jordan Way in front of the police department for for an easy and fast drop off experience.

The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat. DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects our commitment to the communities' safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs at locations in communities throughout the country.

October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Have you noticed the purple lights around Cumberland County? We're proud to partner with Through These Doors to light up our community in purple, standing in solidarity with survivors and raising awareness about domestic violence.

Our partnership with Through These Doors goes beyond October. Their trained advocates provide free, confidential support to anyone affected by abuse, including safety planning, advocacy, and connection to local resources. Our officers work alongside them so that survivors have more than one place to turn for help.

Domestic violence affects people of every age, background, and community. According to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced intimate partner violence. Abuse isn't always physical. It can include threats, intimidation, controlling behavior, isolation, and financial control.

If you're concerned about someone you know, you can help by listening without judgment, believing them, letting them know it's not their fault, and encouraging them to reach out to a trusted resource. Every situation is different, and the person experiencing abuse is the best judge of what feels safe for them.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, you are not alone, and help is available. The police department has information, resources, and support available 24/7. You can also contact:

**RETIREMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CLERK ED HUNT**'
Today, we honor someone who hasn’t just had a career—he has built a remarkable legacy. After more than half a century of dedicated public service, Ed Hunt is officially calling it a career!

A Gorham native and 1970 graduate of Gorham High School, Ed served in the National Guard from 1970–1976. His career in public safety began in the fall of 1973, when a chance encounter with a former classmate led him to an opening for a dispatcher with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department. Ed applied, got the job, and the rest is history.

Along the way, Ed married his wife, Doreen, in April 1975. In 1978, they moved to Cape Elizabeth, where they raised their two children.
Throughout his career, Ed’s professionalism and dedication made a lasting impact. In 1981, he received a Letter of Commendation for his involvement in a sniper incident at the tower at Two Lights State Park. In 1991, he received another Letter of Commendation for his telephone negotiations with a domestic violence suspect, helping bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion.

In 2001, Ed was promoted to Head Dispatcher following the retirement of Mike Walsh. When Cape Elizabeth’s dispatch services were outsourced to Portland Public Safety in 2009, Ed continued serving the community as a clerk with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department.

Ed has described his 35 years as a dispatcher as exciting. He always looked forward to his next shift and never knew what kind of call might come in. Just as importantly, he treasured the camaraderie he shared with Cape Elizabeth’s police officers and fire and rescue personnel.

Over the decades, Ed had the good fortune to work alongside four police chiefs, seven fire chiefs, and more police officers and fire and rescue personnel than he could possibly count.

More than 50 years of service is an extraordinary accomplishment. It represents countless calls answered, countless people helped, friendships formed, memories made, and an unwavering commitment to the community.

Through it all—decades of shifting administrations, evolving technologies, and massive societal changes, one thing remained absolutely constant: Ed’s unwavering commitment to this community.

Ed, thank you for your dedication, professionalism, friendship, and more than half a century of service. Congratulations on an incredible career and a very well-deserved retirement! 👏🎉

***𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍***

The Cape Elizabeth Police Department and School Resource Officer David Galvan would like to welcome Cape Elizabeth students back to school today. It’s our hope that every student has a safe, successful, and fun school year!

We kindly ask all motorists to remain patient and exercise caution when dropping off or picking up students this year. As many of you are aware, Pond Cove and the Middle School have new access points due to the construction of the new middle school.

𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄

Students being dropped off by parents are now required to be dropped off in the new Pond Cove car line which is the old bus circle in front of Pond Cove School. Buses will be utilizing the new parking lot off of Scott Dyer Road.

Pond Cove now has a new main entrance for students. This entrance is accessible via the new parking lot off of Scott Dyer Road. All students who are walking or biking to school should use this entrance.

Vehicles MAY NOT enter the new parking lot to drop off or pick up students during arriving or dismissal. These times are 8:15am to 8:40am and 2:00pm to 3:20pm.

𝐌𝐈𝐃𝐃𝐋𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋

The driveway previously used for middle school drop off, pick up, and visitor parking is no longer open to the public. That driveway is reserved for staff, deliveries, and construction vehicles. Please do not use it to drop off or pick up students.

Families and visitors will instead use the new entrance and parking lot located off of Scott Dyer Road. The new Middle School entrance is near the gym and can be accessed directly from this parking lot.

Please follow all posted signs and staff directions, particularly during the first several days of school as everyone becomes accustomed to the new traffic pattern.

Utilizing Jordan Way to access either school is strictly prohibited.

A friendly reminder that Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are illegal for anyone under the age of 16. Maine’s e-bike laws divide e-bikes into three specific classes, and it is vital for parents to understand these distinctions before purchasing a bike or allowing their child to ride:

Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assist only, meaning the motor only activates when you pedal, and the assist cuts off at 20 mph. These are allowed on most multi-use paths and trails, though you must always check local signage before you ride.

Class 2 e-bikes have a throttle-assist, meaning the motor can propel the bike without pedaling, up to 20 mph. These bikes have much more limited path access.

Class 3 e-bikes are faster, pedal-assist up to 28 mph, and include a speedometer. These are strictly for road use and are not allowed on paths unless explicitly authorized.

Maine law prohibits anyone under the age of 16 from operating Class 2 or Class 3 e-bikes.

Young riders may only operate Class 1 e-bikes. As a parent, you are legally responsible for your child’s compliance with these rules.

Additionally, e-scooters are also illegal for anyone under 16 years old. Please refer to our attached guide for more information.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of retired Public Safety Dispatcher Greg Tinsman, who passed away today at the age of 70.

Greg dedicated nearly five decades to serving several local communities as a firefighter, reserve police officer, and public safety dispatcher. Greg began his public safety career in 1974 as a Reserve Police Officer with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department. He also served with the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department, dedicating 32 years to both departments.

From 1988 to 1998, Greg served as Cape Elizabeth’s Director of Emergency Management. In 1998, he began his career as a Public Safety Dispatcher with Cape Elizabeth, where he served for 11 years. He continued his dispatching career in Kennebunk for two years and Sanford for three years before joining the Scarborough Police Department in 2014.

Greg’s dedication and commitment to public safety were recognized when he received the Maine Association of Police Communications Officer of the Year Award in 2015. Greg retired from Scarborough PD in April 2022 after 25 years of combined service as a Public Safety Dispatcher.

Greg’s life was defined by his commitment to helping others and serving his community. His contributions will be remembered and deeply missed by the many people he worked alongside and served throughout his career. Greg’s quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to tell a good story were second to none.

Please join us in keeping the Tinsman family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
