On October 27, Cape May County proudly marked the completion of Phase Two beautification improvements at the Gerald M. Thornton Veterans Cemetery.

These upgrades honor those who served and keep this sacred ground beautiful, peaceful, and dignified. Highlights include 1,200 plantings (285 trees), 4,500 square yards of sod, new landscape berms, 15 flagpoles, 34 granite markers and wayfinding signs, a refreshed Prayer Garden, plus major improvements to fencing, lighting, sidewalks, paving, and irrigation.

Thank you to Melillo, Bower, Carmen Landscape Architects, DeBlasio Associates Engineering, and our Facilities & Services team for their outstanding work.
Our veterans deserve a place of lasting honor and remembrance. Join us for the County Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11 at 1:00 PM at the cemetery.

God bless our veterans. 🇺🇸

County Accepts State Grant to Strengthen Mental Health Crisis Response

The Cape May County Board of Commissioners has accepted an $84,050 grant from the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety to support the ARRIVE Together Critical Incident Model.

This program pairs the Prosecutor’s Office with Jewish Family Services so mental health professionals can respond alongside law enforcement in high-risk crisis situations (such as barricaded individuals). The goal is safer outcomes, better de-escalation and connecting people to the care they need.

“Partnering law enforcement with mental health professionals helps reduce the chance of a situation escalating and gets people the help they need,” Director Leonard C. Desiderio said.

Cape May County is applying for $3.4 million in state Transportation Trust Fund money to improve roads and bridges in 2027.

Our County Engineer has lined up 10 projects for consideration. These funds help us maintain the infrastructure that residents, visitors, and emergency crews rely on, without relying solely on local taxes.

“These state funds are an important tool that helps us keep our roads and bridges in good condition without placing the entire burden on local taxpayers,” said Commissioner Director Leonard Desiderio.

The County is making Court House–South Dennis Road safer in Middle Township.

Following an engineering study, the speed limit will drop to 45 mph on a 1.3-mile stretch near Goshen-Swainton Road, and the no-passing zone will be extended at the busy intersection with Goshen-Swainton Road.

These changes build on earlier safety upgrades (rumble strips, radar signs, and flashing lights) at a location that has seen serious crashes.

“These changes are based on engineering data and real-world conditions,” Director Leonard C. Desiderio said. “We encourage everyone to stay alert, obey the new speed limit, and respect the no-passing zones.”

Cape May County is accepting more than $116,000 in state funding to support Operation Helping Hand through August 2027.

This program, run through the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, helps connect people struggling with substance use to treatment and recovery services. Locally, it supports outreach efforts like the Hope One mobile unit, which brings recovery resources, Narcan, and support directly into communities across the county.

The funding comes from the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety and requires no local match.

If you or someone you know needs help, resources are available.

Commissioners Recognize Honorees at Scouting America Award Ceremony

Last night’s 2026 Distinguished Citizens Award Ceremony hosted by Scouting America was a wonderful evening celebrating local leaders who personify community service.

Cape May County Commissioners Bobby Barr and Andrew Bulakowski were on hand to recognize the honorees.

“These individuals set a strong example of what it means to give back,” said Commissioner Bobby Barr. “Their commitment to service makes Cape May County a better place for all of us, especially our young people.”

Congratulations to the award recipients:

• Barbara Stafford Jones, President & CEO of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce
• Assemblyman Antwan L. McClellan, NJ Legislative District 1
• Assemblyman Erik K. Simonsen, NJ Legislative District 1

The honorees stressed the importance of community service, civic pride and committing to a higher purpose than oneself. All values that Scouting America works to instill in young people every day.

“Scouting and community leadership go hand in hand,” said Commissioner Andrew Bulakowski. “It’s great to see leaders like Barbara, Antwan, and Erik being recognized for the positive impacts they have on our county.”

Thank you to Event Chair Matthew Craig, Director John Lynch, Garden State Council President Jason Miller, Scout Troops 76, 65, 87 and 73 and all the sponsors who made the evening possible.

On October 24th, the Cape May County Park & Zoo hosted its annual Boo at the Zoo Festival.

Families filled the park for the Boo at the Zoo Parade, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners recognized in categories from Infants through Fifth Grade, the Open Category and Groups/Floats.

Memorable costumes that had the crowd smiling included a crab on a dinner plate, Zombie Hazmat, a classic Cabbage Patch look and a full BBQ Dinner costume.

“What a fantastic turnout and what incredible creativity from our kids and families,” Vice-Director Andrew Bulakowski said. "From the littlest participants to the creative group floats, Boo at the Zoo once again showed why the Cape May County Park & Zoo is such a special place in our community. On behalf of myself and the Board of County Commissioners, thank you to everyone who participated, our dedicated Park & Zoo staff and all the volunteers and judges who made the day possible."

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who came out to join in the Halloween fun!

Exciting news from the Cape May County Zoo on International Snow Leopard Day!

We’re thrilled to welcome two new snow leopards: Asha (1-year-old female from Great Plains Zoo) and Valens (7-year-old male from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo)!

These two have been recommended as a future breeding pair through the Species Survival Plan (SSP) to help maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations of this vulnerable species. With fewer than 10,000 snow leopards estimated in the wild, their potential role in the program is an important part of ongoing conservation efforts.

This continues our zoo’s long history of success with snow leopards. From the seven cubs born to Vijay and Himani (one of the most successful pairs in captivity) to the contributions of Bataar and others. We’re proud to keep the conservation legacy going and to represent this remarkable species.

Asha is currently visible to visitors (with temporary barriers while she settles in). Valens is adjusting to life on the East Coast behind the scenes for now.

Come visit and help us celebrate these magnificent “ghosts of the mountains”!

Commissioners Hear From Citizens Veterans Advisory Committee

On October 22nd, Commissioner Vice-Director Andrew Bulakowski and Commissioner Bobby Barr attended the Citizens Veterans Advisory Committee (CVAC) Luncheon at Duffinetti’s Restaurant & Lounge in Wildwood.

The gathering focused on veterans’ needs and opportunities to better support vulnerable veteran communities across Cape May County.

New CVAC members shared meaningful testimonials about the difference the organization makes by connecting veterans and their families with vital resources and assistance.

The Cape May County Board of County Commissioners remains strongly committed to supporting our veterans and the dedicated volunteers of CVAC who work every day to improve their lives.

We thank CVAC for their continued service and Duffinetti’s for hosting this important event.
