Monterey County US&R Supporting the

Since Friday, August 28, members of the Monterey County Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) Team have been assigned to the as part of a Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team.

The four-person REMS team is embedded with fire crews to provide specialized medical and rescue support in the unfortunate event a firefighter is injured during operations.

While their mission is one we hope is never needed, having a dedicated US&R team on standby provides an additional layer of safety and support for the firefighters working on the front lines.

Prepared. Ready. There when it matters.

Training with purpose. Ready when it matters most.

Yesterday, the Monterey County Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Team came together for their monthly training, focusing on heavy lifting operations and breaking and breaching techniques in confined spaces.

The recent tragedy in Venezuela served as a powerful reminder of the critical role USAR teams play during disasters. It reinforced the importance of continually sharpening these highly specialized skills so our personnel are prepared to respond whenever and wherever they are needed.

Training like this ensures our team remains ready to safely perform complex rescues in some of the most challenging environments.

Training for the moments that matter.

Today, members of the Monterey County Urban Search and Rescue Team sharpened their Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) skills alongside the California Highway Patrol Coastal Division during specialized training in Paso Robles.

Members practiced a variety of critical rescue scenarios, including hoist operations, hover step techniques, and the teamwork required to safely and efficiently support helicopter rescue missions. Opportunities like these strengthen coordination between agencies and ensure rescuers are prepared when every second counts.

A big thank you to the California Highway Patrol Coastal Division for hosting this valuable training and helping our team stay mission ready.

🚨 Ready for the Unexpected 🚨

Today, the Monterey County Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) Team put training into action during a full-scale response exercise on the Monterey Peninsula.

The drill challenged crews with two realistic rescue scenarios:

🔹 Confined space rescue at the Carmel Area Wastewater District
🔹 Trench collapse rescue at the Pebble Beach Company Corporation Yard

These exercises test dispatch procedures, interagency coordination, and field operations under realistic conditions—ensuring our team is prepared to respond when every second counts.

A sincere thank you to Carmel Area Wastewater District and Pebble Beach Company for opening their facilities and supporting this important training opportunity.

Strong partnerships and realistic training help keep our responders ready to protect the communities we serve.
