Carmel by the Sea One of the most awarded destinations in the U.S. You can fine-dine at a number of four-star restaurants or eat al fresco at the beach.

Carmel by the Sea is a place to get away from it all without sacrificing the big-city offerings of art, theater, music, dining, shopping, spas, and more. You can collect art or just covet art and artifacts at almost 100 galleries and antique shops, and you can buy anything from trinkets to Tiffanys. Even those who travel the world are unlikely to encounter another place that has so much to offer in one location.

Long before Clint Eastwood became mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, he was stationed at nearby Fort Ord. It was the beginning of a connection to the area that would span decades.

From choosing Carmel as a place to call home to filming his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me, around the Monterey Peninsula and eventually taking office at City Hall, the destination became an enduring part of Eastwood’s life beyond the screen.

That connection is revisited in a recent Architectural Digest story, which looks back at 10 photographs of Eastwood through the decades and reflects on the places, passions and moments that shaped his off-screen life.

Head to Architectural Digest to read the full story.
