Members of the Putnam County SPCA came to the office today wearing their new safety vests purchased for them by the District Attorney's Office using asset forfeiture funds--the proceeds of criminal activity. They do a great job at the Putnam SPCA and keep a lot of animals safe--so we are very happy to help keep these men safe!

SCAM ALERT! BEWARE OF FAKE MUNICIPAL LETTERS!
A scam letter has gone out to some Putnam County residents regarding an application they may have (or may have had) before the local zoning board of appeals or the local building department, planning department, etc.
The letter looks very convincing and purports to be from the municipality.
The letter notifies the applicant that the application for construction, land use variance, etc., has been approved.
Then the letter will go on to break down an invoice for services which must be paid immediately.
This is followed by the tell-tale scam sentences:
“Reply to this e-mail requesting the official invoice and wire instructions.
“Make payment via the issued wire transfer instructions upon receipt.
“Return a copy of the wire receipt to this e-mail address for confirmation and closure of financial obligations.
“Please note that all correspondence related to this case should be maintained via e-mail for purposes of proper record keeping, auditing compliance, and public agenda organization.
REMEMBER: NEVER send money via the internet to strangers. This is always a scam.
Verify by going directly to your town hall or calling the legitimate municipal phone number that you have verified—not the number given in the letter.
A good rule to follow is the same advice we all give to our children: DON’T TALK OR COMMUNICATE WITH STRANGERS. If you follow this advice, you won’t get scammed.

SCAM ALERT: New text message scam. You get a text saying something like this: "Mom (or Dad, Grandma, etc), I completely destroyed my phone. If you need to reach me, call this number (or "Please call me at this number):"
And you will see a number.
DON'T CALL THAT NUMBER. Use the number you ALREADY have for your relative and call.
99.9999% of the time this is not a real text from a relative. Verify by first calling the number you already have for that person. Then delete the text and block that number.
