On June 14, 2026 at 1408 hours the Putnam County Hazmat Team was requested to assist the Westchester County Hazmat Team to the scene of an active chlorine leak at NYC DEP Shaft 18. The Putnam County team responded with Hazmat 1 to provide additional manpower to assist, Westchester and DEP Hazmat teams who were already operating on scene.

On Tuesday June 9, the Putnam County Hazmat Team conducted a foam drill with the Westside departments (Cold Spring Fire Co. #1 , Garrison Volunteer Fire Company , Continental Village Volunteer Fire Department , North Highlands Engine Co. #1 ) at the North Highlands Fire Department. We reviewed the basics of foam, proper application techniques, and the use of various foam tools. Special thanks to Chris Johnson from Westchester DES for his wonderful teaching skills

This past week two members of the Putnam County Hazmat Team attended an advanced training at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls, New York. Lt Kelly and team member Efferen completed the highest level of hazmat training available in New York; Hazardous Materials Specialist in Cargo Truck and Intermodal Tanks. The New York State Fire Academy is one of 3 places in the entire US to offer this high level of training. We are grateful to the Academy staff for passing on their knowledge and expertise throughout the 40 hour training program.

On Wednesday June 3, 2026, the Putnam County Hazmat Team trained on foam operations and the use of our foam trailer. An environmentally friendly training foam was used to simulate the application of class B firefighting foam. Special thanks to for allowing us to train at your fire house and providing an engine to supply water to the trailer. The Putnam County Hazmat Team has the ability to deploy Class A and Class B foam.

At 1601 hours on 5/31/26 the Putnam County Hazmat Team was requested to respond to assist the at a reported structure fire. Carmel units found a fire that involved a lithium ion battery charger. The Hazmat Team responded to pack the damaged batteries in CellBlock material and returned to service shortly after.

Last year, the three teams that make up the Lower Hudson Valley HazMat Consortium made a commitment — to train together more often. This morning, we put that commitment into action! 🚒

The Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester HazMat teams came together to practice critical skills for dealing with propane emergencies. It was an incredibly productive morning — not only did we sharpen our skills and learn valuable new ones, but we got to strengthen long-time friendships, forge new ones, and most importantly… everyone had a GREAT time! 🙌

Some of the skills we got to practice included:
🔧 Utilizing and hooking up to v***r valves
🔧 Utilizing and hooking up to liquid withdrawal valves
🔧 Working with our underground tank simulator
⛽ And we even got to practice on a real in-service tank!

On Saturday May 2, 2026 the Putnam County Hazmat Team stood by for the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day at Fahnestock Park. We love working with our partners in the Health Department and using the event to train on identifying unknown chemicals.
