Maura Hirschauer says she helped eliminate Illinois’ grocery tax. She voted for the bill. That’s a great thing to print on a mailer that only tells half the story.

The state collected the 1% grocery tax, but the money went to local governments. Cities, villages, and counties for sales in unincorporated areas. It wasn’t funding Springfield’s general fund.

When Springfield repealed it, local governments were left to figure out how to replace that revenue or live without it.

Naperville, Batavia, and Elgin enacted their own 1% grocery taxes. Bartlett didn’t, but raised its home-rule sales tax to address several budget needs, including the loss of grocery-tax revenue. West Chicago chose not to implement a replacement tax for 2026.

We had that discussion in Warrenville, too. As an alderman, I was part of it. We chose not to enact a replacement tax. Our residents got the savings, and the city had to absorb the lost revenue.

When Illinois suspended the grocery tax for a year in 2022, the state reimbursed local governments for the lost revenue.

When the permanent repeal took effect in 2026, there was no comparable reimbursement.

I’m all for lowering taxes. But I also serve in local government, where we have to figure out how to pay for the services our residents expect.

Whose budget actually took the hit when someone in Springfield took credit for cutting taxes.

Springfield got the headlines.

Local governments got the bill.

This morning at 11, Patricia Kladis-Schiappa and I are taking on DuPage County's budget growth, our plan to audit county spending, and why a Chair and a Clerk who work together won't stick taxpayers with another $280,000 legal bill.

HONORED TO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF STATE’S ATTORNEY BOB BERLIN

I’m honored to have the endorsement of my friend, DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin who share's a commitment to public safety, justice, and protecting the families and communities that make DuPage County such a great place to live.

As Bob leads the State’s Attorney’s Office, its mission is clear: seek justice with integrity, protect the public, defend the rights of victims, hold the right people accountable, ensuring justice is pursued ethically, fairly, and independently.

I’m proud to support that mission and to stand alongside the dedicated professionals who work every day to keep our communities safe.

Here’s what Bob had to say about my record:

“Jim has always been a big supporter of the States Attorney’s office and has advocated for the funds and attorneys I need to strongly prosecute the criminals in DuPage County. Jim is a friend of law enforcement and has stood up to make sure our families and communities are safe from crime. I strongly endorse Jim Zay for re-election to the County Board in District 6.”

Rob is an outstanding candidate. So glad to see that the Tribune endorsed him.

Congratulations on the Tribune endorsement, JP!

Today, I received an endorsement that means more to me than I can probably put into words.

The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board has endorsed me for Illinois State Representative in the 49th District.

Now, getting an endorsement from the Chicago Tribune is an incredible honor in itself. But for me, there’s a much more personal story behind it.

My Dad worked for the Chicago Tribune for over two decades.

He was the night foreman and head mechanic, one of the guys responsible for making sure those newspapers actually got delivered every morning.

His workday started around 11 at night. He’d get the trucks ready, get them over to the Freedom Center to be loaded, and make sure they got out on their routes.

And when a truck broke down, Dad was the guy who went out to get it.

He’d take a replacement rig, drive out to wherever the broken-down truck was, swap them out, and bring the old one back.

Sometimes that meant sitting on the Chicago Skyway in 20-below-zero weather, with the wind howling, working on a truck because those newspapers still had to get delivered.

Rain, snow, freezing cold. It didn’t matter.

Most people never gave a second thought to how that newspaper ended up on their doorstep every morning. But there were people like my Dad working through the night to make it happen.

For over two decades, that was his life.

And this morning, I opened the Chicago Tribune to find my own picture and an editorial endorsing me for the Illinois House of Representatives.

The editorial board described me as offering “a refreshing combination of fiscal restraint and thoughtful solutions.”

They recognized my willingness to challenge Springfield’s leadership, my positions on government accountability, and my belief that people working in government should never have to choose between speaking up and protecting their jobs.

I’m proud of that recognition. I’ve worked hard to explain what I believe and why.

But there’s something about this particular endorsement that no other endorsement could ever mean to me.

For over two decades, my Father worked nights making sure the Chicago Tribune reached people’s homes.

And today, that same newspaper is telling its readers about his son.

I haven’t forgotten the sacrifices my Dad made, the hours he worked, or the example he set.

And I also want to thank the hardworking union men and women I grew up around. The people who worked those long nights alongside my Dad, who took pride in their work, and who made sure the job got done. You were part of my childhood, and you helped shape my understanding of what hard work and dedication really mean. Most people never knew your names, but I haven’t forgotten you.

I’m proud to have earned this endorsement.

But I think I’m even prouder to be the son of the man who helped get that newspaper out every morning.

Thank you to the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board for its consideration and endorsement. And thank you, Dad, for over two decades of hard work that most people never saw.

This one means a lot.

We endorsed Jennifer Sanalitro in 2024, and she has continued to earn our confidence with her emphasis on fiscal responsibility and accountability.
