FUN FACT FRIDAY! ๐๐ป
Have you ever noticed large yellow or orange bumps on a bee's hind legs? These arenโt growths, but rather pollen baskets, scientifically known as corbicula. As a worker bee moves from flower to flower, pollen grains deposit on her body. She moistens the pollen by regurgitating nectar or honey on it, then uses her legs to comb the wet pollen down the inside of her leg to an area known as the pollen comb. There, it is pressed and compacted, then passed to the pollen basket where it is held by a single hair that acts like a pin. The bee brings this pollen back to the hive, where it's used to make bee bread and feed the colony ๐๐.
