Fall road trip tip: The pumpkin patch probably isn’t in the lake. 🎃

Set your GPS before you go, keep your eyes on the road and remember: “The machine knows” is not a driving strategy.

Just a reminder: North Dakota state law requires all hay stored on highway rights of way to be removed by Nov. 1. Hay bales remaining on highway rights of way after this date will be removed as directed by the North Dakota Department of Transportation district engineers. Removing the bales helps ensure safe winter maintenance and allows crews to manage snow along state highways.

6-9 p.m. is one of the deadliest windows for pedestrians — right as most of us are driving home, picking up dinner or walking the dog.

The majority of pedestrian deaths in 2024 happened in the dark. Slow down and stay alert!

Saturday, October 10, marks the opening of North Dakota's 2026 regular pheasant season! It's time to lace up the boots, load up the dogs and head into the fields in search of some disco chickens!

Whether you're hunting behind an experienced bird dog or taking a young pup out for its first season, here are a few regulations to remember before heading out.

🗓️ 2026–2027 SEASON
• Opens: October 10, 2026
• Closes: January 3, 2027
• Daily limit: 3 roosters
• Possession limit: 12 roosters
• Possession at permanent residence: Unlimited
• Shooting hours: 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset
• Legal birds: Male pheasants only. Hens are protected.

TRANSPORTING YOUR BIRDS
North Dakota requires pheasants to retain one leg and foot, a fully feathered wing or the fully feathered head attached during transportation until they reach your legal residence or are processed for immediate consumption.

🚨 NONRESIDENT REMINDER
Nonresident hunters cannot hunt on North Dakota Game and Fish wildlife management areas or Conservation PLOTS lands during the first seven days of the regular pheasant season, October 10–16. An exception applies to nonresidents hunting PLOTS land they own.

FI****MS & AM******ON
• Sh****ns: Must be limited to a maximum of three shells.
• Non-toxic shot: Required on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands, including Waterfowl Production Areas.

ENJOY THE HUNT!
Watch out for your dogs, respect landowners and their property, pick up your spent shells and leave the habitat better than you found it.

Good luck to everyone heading out this weekend! May the birds hold tight, the dogs work hard and the memories last longer than the season.

Passing of Deputy Katherine Frank -

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office announces with profound sadness the passing of Deputy Katherine Frank, age 26, earlier today. Deputy Frank was surrounded by her family and loved ones in her final moments. In her final act of service and generosity, she became an organ donor, continuing to help others even in her passing. Katherine worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls. She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center located at 320 W. 4th St., Sioux Falls, SD, for those who wish to pay their respects. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue maintaining a presence at the hospital as we support her family during this difficult time.
Further information regarding funeral services, honors, and departmental arrangements will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always.
