28 parks by 2028 🌲🏕️

Meet Vince, he’s the new Director of the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) and on a quest to visit all 28 Nevada State Parks by 2028.

Our first stop was Valley of Fire State Park. We explored the new visitor center, helped staff with trail work, and found a new obsession with roasted Twinkies!

Where should Vince go next?

Follow along to see him explore the next 27 parks.

Nevada’s trails are getting a plan, and we want your input! 🥾🚵

Nevada Division of State Parks and Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation just launched a public survey that will help us develope the first-ever Statewide Trails Plan.

The plan will guide future trail development, access and management throughout the state, and support a range of outdoor recreation like hiking, biking, OHV use, and more!

Make your voice heard and take the Statewide Trails Plan survey by November 30, 2026!

Access an English or Spanish survey using the link in our bio or at parks.nv.gov/news

When the application says, “willing to work in all weather conditions” 👀⛈️

Southern Nevada is still experiencing the effects of Tropical Storm Rachel. Be prepared for possible closures and hazards as parks tackle issues that arise from storms like this.

Always remember to check weather forecasts, road conditions and park alerts before heading out. Plan ahead at parks.nv.gov.

The first-ever Northern Nevada Bird Fest was a HUGE success! 🦅🦜🦆

With an estimated 500 people in attendance throughout the event, it’s obvious that Nevada loves our birds.

Visitors got to explore many local artist vendors, get hands on education, and sit down for some special presentations by the experts.

Thank you to everyone who made this first year a blast and we can’t wait to bring it back next year.

Shout out to the Nevada State Parks Foundation who sold out of their lunch supplies within the first hour. We’ll be more prepared next year!

Stay up to date at parks.nv.gov/events.

More than 150 years after it’s abandonment, portions of Fort Churchill’s adobe buildings are still standing, but not without a little help.

As Fort Churchill’s permanent caretaker or steward, Nevada State Parks is tasked with maintaining the adobe structures in a state of arrested decay. What does this mean exactly? Arrested decay is a method of historic preservation in which the buildings are stabilized to prevent further collapse and weather damage but are not rebuilt or modernized. Every few years the buildings undergo restoration to prolong the life of the fort.

If you have visited Fort Churchill recently, you likely noticed a restoration project is underway.

DATE: Friday, October 9

TIME: Guests may arrive no later than 9pm and *must be back in their vehicles no later than 10pm.*
You’re welcome to enter and explore the park during the day and end with this hike. 😊

-

LOCATION: Fire Wave Trail;
Parking Lot ‘P3’ ~5 miles north of the OLD Visitor Center.

DIRECTIONS*: Set your destination "Fire Wave Trailhead" in Overton, Nevada. BOTH the West and East Entrances to the park will be OPEN on Friday. The turnoff towards the trailhead is around 4 miles from either entrance.

*If you’re coming from Vegas on I-15N, use Exit 75 even if your map app tells you the road is closed. Our West Entrance is Closed Monday-Thursday, but OPEN Friday-Sunday. Many map apps haven't figured out the schedule and may try to route you to Exit 93).

-

DETAILS: Tealights guide the way on the 1.5 mile (0.75 miles out, 0.75 miles back) hike to the Fire Wave formation.
The trail is over loose sand and rough, rocky terrain. There is one area with stone steps.

COST: Included with regular park entry fees, which can be paid at the kiosks at either entrance.

MUST KNOW: We are ONLY doing the out-and-back trail to Fire Wave, not the full Seven Wonders Loop or any other trail.
Since this event is occurring on the new moon, it will be DARK. (A fun comparison for those of you who’ve done a full moon hike with us before!)

WHAT TO BRING: Water, proper hiking shoes, and a flashlight with a red, blue, or green setting (these colors are less disruptive to others and help preserve your night vision).
Guests may also bring chairs, blankets, etc. to sit and observe the night sky! Telescopes are also welcome.
