Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training The Commissioners were appointed by the governor and the Commission placed under the Attorney General’s Office.

The Nevada Commission on POST is the regulatory agency that establishes and maintains the laws, regulations, and acts as the governing authority for the behavior, hiring, certification and training for law enforcement personnel in state. In 1965, the 53rd session of the Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 390, which established a five member Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The bill declared the purpose of POST: “…to raise the level of competence of state and local law enforcement officers by adopting rules, establishing minimum standards relating to the physical, mental and moral fitness of officers.” This was the beginning of what POST has become today. In 1969, it became the POST Committee under the Crime Commission, and in 1981 it was moved to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety. In 1999, the Commission became a stand-alone agency under the Office of the Governor, and in 2005, the Commission expanded to its present size of nine Commissioners. Throughout the years, there have been many changes affecting criminal justice agencies in Nevada. In 1987, peace officers were placed into three categories: Category I encompassing general law enforcement officers; Category II for specialized limited enforcement duties; and, Category III for correction and confinement officers. Also in 1987, POST established the 24-hours annual continuing education requirement for all categories of peace officer. Over the years, reciprocity with other states has made it easier to certify officers wishing to transfer to Nevada, and the maximum number of months that an officer can be out of law enforcement before being mandated to attend an academy was changed from 24 to 60 months. The Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training is the regulatory agency that establishes and maintains the laws, regulations, and acts as the governing authority for the behavior, hiring, basic and professional certification, course certification, and training requirements for all law enforcement officers in the state. The nine-member Commission is composed of law enforcement officials that are appointed by the Governor. The Commission holds regularly scheduled public workshops and meetings in various locations around the state to discuss and revise laws and regulations, hear issues addressing the law enforcement community, and render judgment regarding officer behavior; which may result in suspension or revocation of POST certification. The functions of the Commission are instrumental in providing Nevada’s citizenry with highly qualified law enforcement officers as well as providing the foundation for the state’s law enforcement agencies to maintain the highest standards of public safety, with the aim of reducing the risk of liability, law suits, and community dissatisfaction. POST continues to actively improve the services it provides for Nevada’s law enforcement community. For the past year, POST has been aggressively embracing computer technology to enhance the accuracy of their data collected on officers and improve communication with the law enforcement agencies. Several electronic forms are now available for agencies to submit information to POST regarding personnel changes, officer training, and course certification. The implementation of this direct information collection has streamlined the processes and has been proven to be efficient and beneficial to both the agencies and POST in maintaining current and accurate officer information.

P.O.S.T would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Lance Tindell.

Today, the Reno Police Department and the City of Reno mourn the heartbreaking loss of Master Police Officer Lance Tindell.

For 18 years, Master Police Officer Tindell dedicated his life to serving the Reno community with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. Throughout his distinguished career, he served in numerous specialized assignments, pursued violent offenders, recovered fi****ms used in crimes, mentored new officers, and worked tirelessly to make Reno a safer place for everyone.

But Lance’s impact reached far beyond his accomplishments.

He was known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and ability to bring laughter and positivity, even on the hardest days. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen and heard—whether comforting a victim, supporting a fellow officer, or simply taking the time to help someone in need. He embodied everything it means to be a police officer: a trusted partner, a dedicated mentor, a compassionate public servant, and a steadfast protector of the community.

Beyond the badge, Lance was a devoted father whose five children were his greatest pride. He led with integrity, humility, and a generous heart, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Master Police Officer Tindell’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the officers he inspired, and the safer community he helped build. While we mourn the loss of an extraordinary officer, we are equally grieving the loss of a cherished friend, colleague, and member of our Reno Police family.
Master Police Officer Tindell is survived by his mother, father, fiancé, and five children.

We ask our community to keep Lance’s family, friends, and every member of the Reno Police Department in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support as we honor a life of service, sacrifice, and compassion. Memorial service information will be shared as it becomes available.

POST would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Detective Thomas Lopey.

The City of Reno and Reno Police Department are mourning the loss of Detective Thomas Lopey, a dedicated public servant whose career was defined by service to his country, his community, and his fellow officers. Detective Lopey served the residents of Reno with distinction for nearly 13 years, leaving a lasting impact on the department and the community he swore to protect.

“Tom was the kind of police officer every department hopes to have, and every officer is fortunate to work beside,” said Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino. “I had the privilege of knowing and working with him throughout much of my career. He was a dedicated detective, a respected leader and, most importantly, a genuinely good man who cared deeply about his family, his fellow officers and the community he served. His loss is felt throughout our department, and his legacy will continue through the countless lives he impacted.”

Detective Lopey proudly served his country in the United States Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom before continuing his service in the National Guard as a combat engineer. He later dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving first with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Reno Police Department, where he faithfully served the Reno community for nearly 13 years.

During his career with the Reno Police Department, Detective Lopey served as a Patrol Training Officer, Regional Gang Unit detective, SWAT Team member, and President of the Reno Police Protective Association. He was respected throughout the department for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to serving others.

Detective Lopey is survived by his wife and daughter.
The City of Reno and Reno Police Department ask the community to keep Detective Lopey’s family, friends, and colleagues in their thoughts during this difficult time.
