We have been asked by GFL, the garbage company that covers Carthage to put this notice out for them.

GFL uses an automated system to pick up the garbage cans and does not have personnel getting off the truck to load them. Because of this, all garbage needs to be in the containers provided and on the curb before 6 AM on the days of pick up. Any garbage not in the container will not be picked up. The handle that you use to move the container needs to face away from the street.

Containers need to be in a clear area away from cars and poles so that the truck can reach out and grab the container.

Recycling is picked up every other week on Thursdays. All recycling must also be in the container to be picked up. Styrofoam and glass are not recyclable.

Any other questions or requests can be sent to GFL.

Update on a few things that will affect Carthage residents.

First if you chose to not opt out of the electrical aggregation program, you will receive a letter from Ameren acknowledging that you are signed up to receive your electricity from Homefield electric. Ameren will still do the billing and maintain the lines feeding your home. Homefield will only be providing the power into Ameren's system for you.

Second, we will soon be working on streets, ditches and culverts as well as starting on the sidewalk from the Library to north of the High School. This has all been delayed due to requirements from the EPA for repairs at our landfill that has taken priority.

This year we are doing something different on a few of the streets and will be tilling the street away and rebuilding the base back to provide for a smoother better shaped street. Initially it will be a packed asphalt/rock road until a second contractor comes back to seal it with a chip seal. There will be a period of time between the two processes.
Also, we will be doing a chip/seal on several street later this summer.

Carthage is very fortunate to have a small group of very dedicated people that make the 4th of July celebration successful every year. The planning, the events on the square, the parade and the wonderful fireworks display all are organized and run by a handful of civic minded individuals with very little financial support from the community. If you enjoyed yourself today, consider volunteering or making a donation. Monetary donations can be left at Carthage city hall and we will make sure it gets to the proper people. Hope you had a fun and safe 4th of July!

We get asked pretty regularly why gas costs so much more in Carthage than in surrounding Illinois towns. There are no special taxes on gas here. The city has no say on pricing or really no influence on pricing. We don't understand the reasoning either.
