Interns Class of 2027 update! The students just wrapped up Module 1, a five-class section with an introduction to the fire service, safety, Incident Management, and lots of hands on PPE and SCBA drills.
This is an impressive group, consistently beating the 60-second PPE donning requirement. During this week's practical, 3 Interns broke the 40 second barrier, and all finished with time to spare. They are now working on air management while wearing SCBA under increasingly difficult evolutions. With each evolution they are improving their breathing skills, which extends their "cylinder time" significantly. Air consumption for Class 5 averaged 17.2 minutes of air in a 30 minute cylinder. Class 6 increased by 25% to 23 minutes of air in a 30 minute cylinder. The longer they can get their cylinder to last, the more work they can safely do. That's good progress and I hope to see it continue to improve.
Module 2 is Fire Science and Fire Dynamics, and will be a brief section before we go back to full hands-on with hoses and streams.
