This week, we welcomed local third graders to our campus for our annual Founders Day! 🍎

Founders Day is a cherished tradition that invites students from Blue Ridge School and Summit Charter School to step back in time, reflect on life in the 19th-century, and celebrate our rich cultural heritage. Activities included historic tours of the Zachary-Tolbert House, 19th-century games, a scavenger hunt, apple c***r making using traditional methods, broom making, weaving, and traditional Appalachian “Jack Tales” from a local storyteller.

We look forward to another fun, educational day next year!

JOIN US TOMORROW AT 3:00 PM!

Our 2026 Mountain Heritage Lecture Series continues with Dr. Jessie Swigger of Western Carolina University, sharing insights from her new book, "Please Touch: A History of the First Four Children’s Museums in the United States (1899–1965)."

PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW LOCATION: This lecture will be held at Crooked Corners Cabin on the CHS campus.

As the only museum in Cashiers, we’re taking a fascinating look at the history of museums themselves — and how the children’s museum movement helped transform the way museums educate, engage, and serve their communities.

When the Brooklyn Children’s Museum opened in 1899, it did something radical: rather than keeping artifacts safely behind glass, the museum invited children to interact with objects firsthand — to “please touch.” That innovative approach helped launch a movement that would influence museums of all kinds.

Dr. Swigger, Professor of History and Director of Public History at Western Carolina University, will explore these pioneering institutions, the women who helped lead them, and their lasting influence on how museums connect with their audiences today.

Free admission for CHS members, $5 suggested donation for non-members

We hope you’ll join us tomorrow for this fascinating look at the history — and future — of the museum experience!

And don’t forget to mark your calendar for our next Mountain Heritage Lecture on Wednesday, October 21: “Anatomy of a Purple State: North Carolina Politics.”
