๐Ÿ’š Sometimes, the most important first step is simply being there.

Family members are often the first to notice when something feels different. Changes in behavior, mood, or daily routines may be signs that a loved one is struggling with mental health or substance use concerns.

You donโ€™t have to have all the answers to make a difference. Sometimes, the most meaningful things you can do are:

๐Ÿ’š Notice changes and check in.
๐Ÿ’š Listen with compassion, not judgment.
๐Ÿ’š Let your loved one know they are not alone.
๐Ÿ’š Encourage professional support when needed.

A caring conversation can open the door to support, hope, and healing. You never know how much a simple โ€œIโ€™m here for youโ€ might mean to someone who is struggling.

You donโ€™t have to be an expert to make a difference. You just have to care. ๐Ÿ’š

USU Extensionโ€™s HEART Initiative shares five strategies to help families support loved ones facing mental health or substance use concerns. Learn how to listen, reduce stigma, and offer hope. Dennis Hinkamp
