Shortly after 2pm this afternoon, crews responded for a reported brush fire near the intersection of Crowfoot Valley Road and Pradera Parkway. Units arrived to find a working brush fire that was not threatening any structures. Crews used brush trucks, progressive hose packs, and hand tools to get the fire under control and mopped up in about 2 hours. Thank you to South Metro Fire Rescue and Franktown Fire Protection District for the assistance!

It’s Fire Prevention Week! This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging is a Superpower.” Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 4 to Oct. 10, and Castle Rock Fire and Rescue will share safety messages all month long about safe charging to help keep you safe from injuries and fires.

Rechargeable devices are part of everyday life. Phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters often rely on lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a lot of energy in a small space and can become a fire risk if damaged or charged improperly.

The first thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to use the right charger. Use the charging cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Make safe charging your superpower all year long and visit https://www.fpw.org/ to learn more.

A safer home can start with a better charging habit. During Fire Prevention Week, Castle Rock Fire and Rescue is highlighting simple steps residents can take to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” applies to everyday devices, from phones and laptops to e-bikes and scooters. Fire departments are reporting an increasing number of lithium-ion battery fires and explosions. Damaged or improperly charged batteries can overheat, start a fire or explode.

Did you know your bathroom exhaust fans pose a critical safety concern as an electrical fire hazard?

Bathroom exhaust fans help remove moisture — but they need regular care to stay safe. Dust, lint and debris can build up inside the fan, increasing the risk of overheating.

Take a few minutes to check and clean your bathroom exhaust fans regularly, and watch for warning signs like discoloration, a burning smell, or new loud, scraping or squeaking noises.

A few simple steps can help:
Clean away dust and debris at least two times per year
Avoid leaving the fan running unattended for long periods
Have damaged or noisy fans inspected or replaced
Test smoke alarms regularly throughout the home

Small maintenance tasks can make a big difference in helping prevent home fires.

🚒 40 Years. One Department. A Lifetime of Service. Still going strong!

Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone for our Fire Chief, Norris Croom — 40 years of service to Castle Rock Fire!

Norris began his journey with our department as a volunteer firefighter in 1986. Seven years later, in 1993, he became a paid Firefighter/Paramedic, continuing to serve the community he had already dedicated himself to.

In 1997, Norris was promoted to Lieutenant/Shift Commander, and later that same year became Division Chief of Training. Over the years that followed, he served in several Division Chief roles, ultimately becoming Deputy Chief of Operations in 2010.

In September 2018, after more than three decades of serving in the ranks, Norris became Fire Chief of Castle Rock Fire.

But a career isn’t measured only by titles or promotions.

It’s measured by the people you lead, the firefighters you mentor, the calls you answer, the families you help, the difficult decisions you make, and the example you leave behind.

For four decades, Chief Croom has been a part of the story of Castle Rock Fire — growing alongside the department, helping shape its future, and dedicating his career to the people we serve.

From a volunteer firefighter in 1986 to Fire Chief in 2018 and beyond, 40 years represents far more than time served. It represents a lifetime of commitment to this department and this community.

Please join us in congratulating Fire Chief Norris Croom on an incredible 40 years of service!

👏 Thank you, Chief, for four decades of dedication, leadership, and service to Castle Rock Fire. We are looking forward to your future time with us!

🚒❤️ Congratulations, Chief Croom!

Would everyone in your household know what to do if an emergency happened today?

September is National Preparedness Month, and a good time to make a plan before an emergency occurs. Talk with your household members about emergencies and a plan of action. Determine how you will communicate, where you will meet if separated, and what to do if you need to evacuate or shelter in place. Include important phone numbers, medical information, medications and plans for pets in a place you can all locate.

Once you have a plan, build or update an emergency kit. Include essential items your household may need if utilities are disrupted, roads are closed, or you need to leave home quickly. Consider water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers and copies of important documents.

Preparedness can make a difference during severe weather, wildfires, power outages and other emergencies.

You do not have to prepare for everything in one day. Use National Preparedness Month to take a few practical steps now so your household is better prepared when needed.

Yesterday, Castle Rock Fire & Rescue deployed three wildland firefighters to Oklahoma to assist with increased wildfire activity across the state.

Our crew, along with additional firefighters from other agencies, has been assigned to an area north of Oklahoma City that stretches roughly two hours from north to south. Their primary mission is to patrol the area, monitor for new fires—particularly those sparked by lightning—and quickly respond to any incidents they find.

The area has experienced numerous grass fires over the past several weeks, while local fire service resources are limited. Having additional wildland crews on the ground helps provide an important layer of protection for the communities and open spaces in the area.

The Castle Rock crew is deployed with Brush 154, one of our Type 6 wildland engines, and will remain in Oklahoma for up to 16 days.

We’re proud to see our firefighters answer the call beyond our own community and put their wildland expertise to work where it’s needed most. Stay safe, Oklahoma! 🔥🤝
