You can subscribe to receive alerts at https://www.castletonvermont.org/subscribe

The Town maintains accounts on various social media platforms to help share information and engage with the community. However, social media is not the Town's official communication platform and should not be relied upon as the primary source for important announcements, warnings, or official public notices. Information shared on social media is intended to supplement, not replace, the information published on the Town's official website. If you want to communicate or share a concern, lodge a complaint, or simply discuss a particular matter, do not leave comments on social media platforms and expect a response. Please use email, phone, snail mail, or in-person methods to achieve results.

In addition to following the Town's website, I strongly encourage every resident to enroll in VT-ALERT, Vermont's official emergency notification system. VT-ALERT is a free service operated by Vermont Emergency Management that allows state and local officials to send timely notifications about emergencies and other situations that may affect your safety or daily life. Alerts may include severe weather, evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, road closures, boil water advisories, hazardous material incidents, public safety emergencies, and other urgent notifications. Subscribers can customize the locations they wish to monitor, choose the types of alerts they want to receive, and select how they receive notifications, including text message, email, phone call, or through the Everbridge mobile app. These customizable options help ensure you receive the information that matters most to you, as quickly as possible.

What to Do If You Find a Bat in Your Home

Rabies
What to Do If You Find a Bat in Your Home
Vermont Dept. of Health, Department of Health, State of Vermont

Mid-to-late summer is peak time for bat activity in Vermont. Since bats can carry rabies and find their way into your home or other buildings, it's important to know what to do if you encounter one.

Check out these tips and videos from the departments of Health and Fish &Wildlife to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSoOsjGC1JMo

• Do not release the bat.
• If you can do so safely and without getting bitten, confine the bat while awaiting guidance.
• Call the Rabies Hotline at 1-800-4-RABIES or your local Game Warden for help and to determine if there has been a possible rabies exposure, including when a bat is found in the same room as a sleeping person.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and nervous system and spreads primarily through bites from infected animals. Rabies can be prevented in people if treatment starts soon after an exposure.
