Neighbors serving Neighbors.
The third quarter has been another busy one for the members of Cave Spring Volunteer Fire Department. As our call volume continues to increase, our volunteers remain committed to answering the call, training, and supporting our community and regional partners.
This quarter also marked a significant transition for Assistant Chief Jonathan Zook, who stepped into reserve status after more than 19 years of dedicated active service to Cave Spring. We are incredibly thankful for the countless hours, leadership, mentorship, and commitment he has given to our department and community over nearly two decades.
Training remained a major focus throughout the quarter. Members completed lifesaving CPR and AED training, continuing to strengthen skills that can make a difference both on and off the fireground.
More than 20 members also participated in a full day of hands-on training at an acquired structure. Members trained on search and rescue, hoseline movement, ventilation, firefighter rescue, and other fundamental fireground skills before putting those skills together during full-speed evolutions. We were also glad to have members of Roanoke County Fire & Rescue B-Shift join us for the training. Opportunities to train in real structures are invaluable and allow our firefighters to practice in an environment that closely resembles the conditions they may face during an emergency.
Volunteer Academy 25 also kicked off this quarter and is now entering the final weeks of Firefighter I. Cave Spring currently has three members attending the academy, while several of our members have dedicated their weekends to helping teach and develop the next generation of firefighters.
Cave Spring was also proud to sponsor the Roanoke 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, an event honoring the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, while supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Several of our members attended and completed the climb alongside firefighters and community members from across the region.
Between emergency responses, training nights, academy weekends, community events, and countless hours behind the scenes, our members continue to give their time to ensure Cave Spring is ready when our community needs us.
