🌳 We thrived during week five of School of the Wild!

We're reminiscing about Cedar Heights Elementary's School of the Wild week! These 6th graders joined us two weeks ago and had an incredible week learning new skills, including canoeing, bird identification, and more!

We'd like to send an extra thank you to Buchanan County naturalist, Michael Maas, for teaching us all about owls and introducing us to Harvey!

πŸ¦… Meet the Merlin!

Merlin populations declined in the 1960s due to pesticide contamination. These changes were first detected through hawk migration counts, showing the power of long-term monitoring. Because Merlins travel across broad regions, surveys conducted throughout their range were critical in identifying these losses.

Today, more than 300 hawk migration surveys take place across the Americas each year, helping scientists track population trends, map migration routes, and guide conservation priorities. There are three Hawkwatch Sites in Iowa, located in Liscomb, Honey Creek, and Solon.

πŸͺΉ Meet the Barn Swallow!

This familiar species ranges widely across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. They can be found nesting and raising young in Iowa from April to September.

Because of their vast range, researchers rely on landowners, students, and community members to help track Barn Swallow arrivals, nesting activity, and population trends. Additionally, Barn Swallows depend on flying insects for food. As insect populations decline worldwide, swallow numbers are falling in parallel.

You can help by reporting nests and breeding activity to NestWatch πŸ‘‡

πŸ’ Meet the Ruby-throated Hummingbird!

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird migrates between wintering sites in Central America and nesting areas across the eastern United States into Canada. They can be found in Iowa from May to October, with most leaving by mid-September. Despite their agility, hummingbirds are among the bird groups most impacted by collisions with glass, and researchers are still working to understand why.

Reporting bird-window collisions helps identify which homes and buildings pose the greatest risks. With better data, communities can prioritize solutions that make buildings safer for birds. You can report collisions at the link below πŸ‘‡

⛅️ Every bird counts - your observations matter!

Happy World Migratory Bird Day! This year, WMBD is shining a spotlight on the importance of citizen science in the conservation of migratory birds. Individual contributions and bird monitoring efforts provide the data necessary for informing policy decisions and ongoing conservation efforts.

Over the next few days, we will be highlighting three of the seven highlighted birds that can be found in Iowa!
