We're often asked about how Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) are used by our officers and investigators. For the last year-and-a-half, we have provided information on the use of ALPR tech in the community and statistical data about its use by our team. Those reports are always available at www.CityofCR.com/ALPR

Today, we wanted to highlight a recent, successful use that appears in our most recent report.

Sep 18, 2026 Patrol officers received a stolen vehicle notification alert from department license plate reader located at 1st Ave E and 33rd St NE. Officers responded and located a stolen vehicle near the intersection of 3rd Ave and 33rd St Dr SE. The stolen vehicle was occupied by two males.
A traffic stop was conducted after independently confirming the plate on the vehicle matched the stolen vehicle reported from Marion, Iowa. After investigation, the driver, a 45-year-old male from Viola, Iowa, was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance Methamphetamine – 3rd or Subsequent. The passenger, a 52-year-old male from Anamosa, Iowa was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance Methamphetamine - 2nd Offense.

The stolen vehicle was recovered by the registered owner.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is excited to introduce the expanded use of the Axon ecosystem, a modern suite of public safety tools designed to improve community safety while upholding strong privacy protections and accountability. These technologies help officers respond more effectively, make informed decisions, and maintain transparency in every interaction.

This is an overview of what's already in place and what's coming to the Cedar Rapids community:

𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙉𝙤𝙬:
Axon Body 4 cameras & Fleet 3 in car systems – A trusted, established upgrade to our previous body cameras and in car camera systems. Axon Body 4 automatically activates in many situations, provides bi-directional communication with supervisors who can view live video remotely and support real-time translation of approximately 57 languages.

Axon Evidence – Digital evidence management system securely stores body-worn camera video, car video, photographs, 3rd party digital evidence, and ALPR data in one protected system. Strong privacy safeguards guide every part of this technology with robust security and audit trails. CRPD controls when and how data is shared.

AXON Taser 10 – A multi-shot less lethal energy weapon. Automatically triggers connected Axon Body 4 and Fleet cameras, syncing data to Axon Evidence. Supervisors are automatically notified by alerts when Taser is armed.

VR Training – Utilizes virtual reality headsets, fi****ms, and tasers for realistic, cost-effective training to build confidence and proficiency. Officers can practice critical incident responses, community calls and mental health crises with empathy, realism, and sound judgement under pressure.

𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙤𝙤𝙣:
FUSUS – Axon’s Real-Time Operations platform unifies body camera, car video, City-owned cameras, drone video and ALPR alerts into one view so officers can coordinate safe, effective, and unified responses.

Drone as First Responder – Skydio X10 will enhance safety with live aerial intelligence to officers, often before they arrive. Drones launch in under 20 seconds and reach incidents in under 90 seconds. All flights are recorded and automatically uploaded to Axon Evidence. All flights are piloted by a Part 107 FAA licensed CPRD officer.

Axon Outpost ALPR – Axon’s proprietary ALPR (Automated License Plate Reader) system. These are department-owned and operated. Outpost provides real time alerts to officers for stolen vehicles, stolen license plates, arrest warrants and missing persons. ALPR data is only retained for 30 days unless tied to an active investigation and the department has strict control over who has access. All searches must be connected to a legitimate case, with comprehensive audit logging-ensuring full accountability.

The intersection of Blairs Ferry and Edgewood Road NE is currently congested due to a traffic accident. Power lines are down after being struck by a raised dump truck bed. Expect delays and follow officer instructions to detour.

Cedar Rapids is No. 7 in WalletHub’s 2026 Safest Cities in America ranking.

The study compared 182 cities across home and community safety, natural-disaster risk and financial safety. The recognition follows Cedar Rapids’ No. 22 placement in WalletHub’s Best-Run Cities in America ranking earlier this year.

Locally, reported burglaries, vehicle thefts and aggravated assaults declined through September compared with the same period last year. Shots-fired incidents remained well below the five-year average.

Thank you to our first responders, community partners and residents who contribute to this work every day. Preventing emergencies, responding when help is needed and addressing safety concerns remain daily priorities.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is aware of several erroneous online reports of an active shooter situation on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids that reportedly began at 9:30 this evening. That information is incorrect.
Officers responded to the area following calls from concerned individuals and determined the claims were inaccurate.
There was no threat to public safety.

As a reminder, reposting unsubstantiated information from online sources without confirming its accuracy imparts fear to the public and makes it harder for officers and first responders to do their job efficiently.

Cedar Rapids Police & Fire Respond to Motorcycle vs. Automobile Accident with Injury

Cedar Rapids, IA – Cedar Rapids Police and Fire personnel responded to the intersection of 1st Ave E and 8th St E at approximately 6:53p.m. Wednesday following reports of a motorcycle vs. automobile accident. Upon arrival, responders located and began first aid an adult female suffering serious injuries to lower extremities who required immediate transport to a hospital for medical treatment. It was later determined she was the passenger on the motorcycle.
Traffic reconstructionists were called to process the scene, causing street short-term road closures.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
