Polk County Weather Update | Final Update for Hurricane Isaias

As Hurricane Isaias continues to move away from our area, conditions across Polk County are gradually improving. We can still expect periods of light to moderate rain throughout the remainder of the day as additional bands rotate around the departing system.

Gusty winds will continue at times through this afternoon and evening, with gusts of 30-40 mph possible. As a result, the risk for downed trees, downed limbs, and isolated power outages will remain through the remainder of the day.

The good news is that the threat of significant heavy rainfall and brief spin-up tornadoes has moved out of Polk County. Additionally, the National Weather Service is expected to update the current Flood Watch as flooding concerns continue to diminish across the area.

Polk County Emergency Management would like to thank our public safety agencies, county departments, municipalities, utility partners, ESF partners, and the citizens of Polk County for their preparedness and cooperation throughout this event.

This will be our final routine update regarding Hurricane Isaias unless conditions warrant otherwise. As always, continue to use caution around downed trees and power lines and report any emergencies through the appropriate channels.

Stay safe, Polk County.

Polk County Weather Update | 8:30 A.M. Saturday

Hurricane Isaias moved inland overnight after making landfall near Destin, Florida, and continues to weaken as it tracks north through Alabama. While the storm is weakening, impacts are still being felt well east of the center across Georgia.

Polk County remains under a High Wind Warning and Flood Watch. Periods of rain and increasing winds will continue throughout the day, with the potential for strong wind gusts, downed trees and power lines, scattered power outages, localized flooding, and brief spin-up tornadoes within heavier rain bands.

The National Weather Service continues to forecast the possibility for stronger winds developing throughout the day as the system moves farther north. As a result, residents should anticipate the possibility of sporadic power outages.

Flooding is a low risk concern but If you encounter flooded roadways, remember "Turn Around, Don't Drown." Never drive through water covering a roadway, as the depth and condition of the road beneath may be unknown.

Polk County Weather Update | Friday Afternoon

As many of you have already heard, Polk County has now been upgraded to a High Wind Warning as Hurricane Isaias approaches the region.

While much of the attention is focused on the storm's center tracking through Alabama, Polk County remains on the eastern side of the system where impacts are expected to be felt. Current forecasts indicate our main concerns will be strong wind gusts capable of bringing down trees and power lines, periods of heavy rainfall, isolated flooding concerns, brief spin-up tornadoes, and scattered to potentially prolonged power outages.

The highest impacts are currently expected from the early morning hours Saturday through Saturday evening, but tropical systems can change quickly and residents should be prepared for forecast adjustments.

Polk County Emergency Management will be monitoring conditions throughout the night and coordinating with our local, state, and National Weather Service partners. We encourage everyone to complete any remaining preparations this evening, charge electronic devices, and ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings while you sleep.

Polk County Emergency Management is monitoring Hurricane Isaias as it moves inland this weekend. While the current forecast shows the storm's center tracking through Alabama, weather impacts are expected well east of the center and could affect Polk County.

At this time, the greatest impacts are forecast to arrive around 3:00 A.M. Saturday morning and continue through Saturday evening. Current forecasts indicate the potential for strong winds, heavy rainfall, brief spin-up tornadoes, localized flooding, and power outages.

Polk County is currently under a Flood Watch and High Wind Watch through Sunday morning. Residents should be prepared for the possibility of downed trees, downed power lines, and difficult travel conditions during periods of heavy rain and stronger wind gusts.

It is important to remember that tropical system forecasts can and often do change. The exact timing, track, and impacts remain uncertain and may shift as the storm approaches. Residents should continue monitoring trusted weather sources and be prepared for changing conditions.

Now is the time to prepare. Charge electronic devices, secure outdoor items, review your emergency plans, and be ready for possible power outages. If using a generator, operate it outdoors and away from doors, windows, and vents.

Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially overnight. Do not rely on a single source of information.

Over the weekend, severe storms impacted the western portion of Polk County, resulting in nearly 40 downed trees across the area. One of those trees fell onto a resident's home. Polk County EMA was able to assist the homeowner by connecting them with the American Red Cross and He Restores Non-Profit Ministries, which provided assistance with removing the tree from the residence. We are grateful for the support of He Restores and all of our community partners who help our citizens recover when disasters strike.
