We are excited to announce the return of the Artist in Residence program to our school, made possible through the generous funding of the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation.

Last week, local artist Katie Eberts visited to teach students how to capture the beauty of the UP environment through mixed-media art. During her visit, K–5 classes and teachers collaborated on a group art project that brought everyone's creativity together, while Art I and Art II students spent dedicated time in the art room learning directly from Katie and experimenting with these techniques on their own projects.

Thank you, Katie, for sharing your talent and inspiring our students, and thank you again to the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation for supporting arts education in our school!

Ensuring student safety isn’t a job solely for transportation teams—it takes our entire community working together! 🚸

As we conclude National School Bus Safety Week and Michigan’s Operation Safe Stop, here is how we can all contribute:
-->Drivers: Never pass a stopped school bus with its stop-arm extended.
-->Parents: Remind kids to stay 10 feet back from the curb in the Danger Zone.
-->Students: Always make eye contact with your driver before crossing the road.

Let’s work together to ensure every student arrives at school and gets home safe every single day!

🚌 FACT: Students are about 70 TIMES more likely to get to school safely if they ride in a school bus instead of a passenger car!

While school buses are statistically the safest mode of student transportation, the most vulnerable moment for a child is entering or exiting the bus—the "Danger Zone."

Here’s how parents and students can stay safe:
-->Stand Back: Teach children to stay at least 3 big steps (10 feet) back from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop.
-->Make Eye Contact: Always look directly at the bus driver and wait for their signal before crossing in front of the bus.
-->Stay Alert: Put away devices and headphones when loading or unloading.

Our kindergarten class read Bitsy Bat, School Star by Kaz Windness this week. They learned how everyone shines in their own unique way and why individual differences make our school community special.

Inspired by Bitsy, the kindergarteners created their very own bats holding stars to share what makes each of them unique!

🛑 ATTENTION DRIVERS: Brake for the School Bus! 🛑

Did you know that nearly two-thirds of school bus–related fatalities of school-age children occur outside of the school bus? Passing vehicles are responsible for an estimated two-thirds of loading and unloading fatalities.

-->Stop Means Stop: Always stop when the bus stop-arm is extended and yellow/red lights are flashing.
-->Stay Alert: Expect frequent stops near neighborhood pickup zones and watch for children crossing.

Let’s keep our streets safe and protect our students during drop-off and pick-up times!

Honoring Our Everyday Heroes 💛

Every morning across Michigan, thousands of yellow school buses head out into our communities with a vital mission: delivering our children safely to their classrooms.

Behind the wheel of each bus is a dedicated professional—an everyday hero who brings care, patience, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our students.

We want to give a special shoutout to our incredible transportation team:
🚌 Kim Thompson – Bus Driver
🚌 Kris Mills – Bus Driver
🚌 Tom Portice – Bus Driver
📋 Joanne Baker – Transportation Director

Ensuring student safety isn’t a job solely for transportation teams—it takes all of us! Take a moment this week to thank Joanne, Kim, Tom, Kris, and all the drivers who keep our kids safe every day. ❤️

Our 3rd graders had a great time on Mackinac Island today! The students visited historic Fort Mackinac, watched a cannon and r***e demonstration, and explored what life was like in the 1800s.

Thanks to our chaperones, Mrs. Duncan, and the Education Foundation for making this trip possible!
