What he enjoys most about being a firefighter:
“Helping people and helping save lives.”

Favorite part of the department:
“Being able to help people in need.”

His favorite part of being on the department:
“The group of guys we have get along great with each other. We have a great group!”

Advice for anyone thinking about joining:
“Join the department. You won’t regret it!”

Thank you, Derek, for your years of dedication and service to our community and for being part of our department family!

🚒 Firefighter Spotlight Series 🧑‍🚒

This week, we’re proud to feature Firefighter Travis Klosterman!

Travis has been serving with our department since September 2004, with 22 years of service! Firefighting is a family tradition for Travis, as his dad and brothers were all members of the department. ❤️🚒

What he enjoys most about being a firefighter:
“Serving the community. Helping others when they need help.”

Favorite part of the department:
“Montezuma has a great group of firefighters. It’s like one big family.”

One of Travis’s most memorable calls was a fully engulfed barn fire right in Montezuma. His dad was driving the fire truck, while Travis and his brother rode in the backseat responding to the fire together. The crew was able to get a quick knockdown. Talk about a family affair! 🚒🔥

Advice for anyone thinking about joining:
“Go ahead and join! It’s awesome to be able to help out others when they are needing help. Being a fireman is such a great opportunity to meet and help out so many wonderful people.”

Thank you, Travis, for 22 years of dedication, service, and commitment to our department and community. We’re proud to have you as part of our fire department family!

🔥 National Fire Prevention Week 🚒

Fire prevention starts at home! This National Fire Prevention Month, the Montezuma Fire Department encourages everyone to take a few minutes to make sure their families are prepared in case of a fire.

🏠 A few important reminders:

🚨 Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.

🚪 Make an escape plan and know two ways out of every room.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Practice your escape plan with everyone in your household, including children.

📍 Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home.

🍳 Stay alert while cooking and never leave cooking unattended.

🔥 Get out and stay out! If a fire occurs, get outside and call 911. Never go back inside for belongings or pets.

A few minutes of preparation today could save lives tomorrow. ❤️

Let’s work together to keep our families, homes, and community safe!

🚒 Firefighter Spotlight Series 👩‍🚒

This week, we’re proud to feature Firefighter Laura Walker!

Laura has been serving with our department since 2003. She joined because she wanted to give back and assist the community — and more than two decades later, she continues to do just that.

What she enjoys most about being a firefighter:
“Driving the apparatus.”

Favorite part of the department:
“Our up-to-date apparatus, including the boat.”

Most memorable moment:
“Doing boot collection while pregnant with twins. My belly was too big for my turnout gear!” 😂

Advice for anyone thinking about joining:
“I have never paid for a certification because I started my career as a volunteer. Being able to pay back my time as a volunteer has proven to be invaluable for me. I appreciate them giving me a chance and allowing me to continue to serve, as well as continue my professional fire service career.”

Thank you, Laura, for more than 20 years of service, dedication, and commitment to our department and community! 👩‍🚒❤️

This past weekend, 9 of our department members and their spouses had the opportunity to attend a talk by Travis Howze, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and former police officer and firefighter.

Travis travels the country talking to first responders, military personnel, healthcare professionals, leaders and their families about mental health, PTSD, the emotional challenges that come with these careers and the importance of keeping mental health in conversations.

A huge thank you to Let's Back the Blue 2.0 of Auglaize County for organizing and being a sponsor of this event! And big thank you to Travis Howze for sharing his experience and perspective with our firefighters! 🇺🇸

🚒 Firefighter Spotlight Series 🧑‍🚒

This week, we’re proud to feature Matt Walker — Firefighter/AEMT!

Matt has been serving with our department for an incredible 24 years. After moving to the community following school, he wanted to find a way to give back to the community he had made his home.

What he enjoys most about being a firefighter:
“Being able to help the community.”

Favorite part of the department:
“The camaraderie with the other members. Being part of the fire service is being part of a brotherhood/sisterhood.”

Most memorable moment:
Some of the most entertaining moments happen after those middle-of-the-night calls — especially when you get to see what some firefighters consider appropriate emergency-response attire! 😂

Thank you, Matt, for 24 years of service, dedication, and commitment to our department and community!

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — We Remember. 🇺🇸

25 years later, we continue to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families and communities forever changed that day.

We especially honor the 343 firefighters and all of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while running toward danger to help others.

We remember their courage.
We remember their service.
We remember their families.
And we will never forget.

Today, we stand together in remembrance and gratitude for all those who serve and protect our communities.

We would like to send a huge thank you to Kozy Campground for allowing our department to use a couple of houses this week for hands-on training!

Opportunities to train in real structures are hard to come by, and having the chance to practice in a realistic environment is invaluable. This type of training allows our members to build skills, gain confidence, and be better prepared when we’re called upon to serve our community.

Thank you for helping us train for the moments that matter! 👨‍🚒🔥🚒
