Located approximately 15 miles from Denver, the city is a relatively new community, having only incorporated in 2001. The city serves primarily as a bedroom community for the nearby capital, in addition to Aurora, Colorado. The area was incorporated in 2001, in an effort to prevent nearby Greenwood Village from annexing parts of the city. The annexation would have caused local taxes to rise, and m
ost of the residents were against such action. The community voted to incorporate in September of 2000, and the name Centennial was chosen by the voters. As the population of the area was more than 100,000 people when the city incorporated, the incorporation was the largest ever in United States history. The city is home to many recreational locations, including the Dry Creek Dam and the DeKovend Park. Many of the local residents work in nearby communities, though the city has begun commercial development plans in recent years. At the present, the city's Economic Development Strategic Plan has laid out the community's current economic position, and its goal for both the short-term and long-term future. Centennial is the site of the first IKEA store in the state of Colorado. The city is also home to the Denver Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The church worked directly with the community in determining the building's design, in hopes that the temple would be well-received by residents of the city. Centennial is also home to the headquarters of Gamma Phi Beta. The sorority has more than 170,000 member worldwide.
